Submitting to search engines. All it's cracked up to be?

Hmm. I have never submitted any of my sites to search engines. Is this really necessary? If so, which search engines should I submit to? If my site has been around a while, is it still necessary? Are there any non-scam, cheap submission services out there?

Sorry if I am ignorant on the topic, but I am. I just have never spent the time/ money to do this...

im not an expert either but i read my web stats and they tell me 50% of my traffic comes from google 15% from yahoo .. the other directories combined = 3% i would at least submit my site manually to those 2 IMO :)

In SEO people do tell that it is useless to submit your site to the search engines. And if you make links for it then the search engines will eventually find your sites.

But I did had one thread last year for search engine submissions and people liked it a lot. They were even getting small amount of traffic from the rare search engines which most of the people and SEO's forget to target them.

Even small number of traffic is traffic. Who knows someone might purchase your product after landing through that search engine.

Any search engine that provides a reasonable amount of traffic will be able to find your site with you having to submit to them.

I don't submit sites I'm working on, ever. Get some decent links and they'll find you. Have a sitemap ready for when they do, that helps. :imho:

Don't submit your site to search engines. ITs a waste of time.

Yes. As the others have pointed out to get listed in the search engines you need backlinks pointing to your site.

This question seems to come up most weeks.

If you've got backlinks, search engine submission doesn't is pointless because you'll get indexed without it.

If you haven't got backlinks, search engine submission is pointless because you won't rank even with it.

Either way, search engine submission is pointless.

Just as Dan_vt said, go get some backlinks to your site. When you do, the major search engines will find you.
