What are you searching for, and what do you expect to see that you aren't?

I ran a few searches and they worked.

Thanks.

Hi Eric

It does work, but I think it cuts down on results. I have noticed that before and was disappointed a few times. I search for something I read long back and is in my memory, but I wouldn't find the thread. Are you able to relate something? Few others have also mentioned about this I guess.

For example, now, I searched for "6n.com" trying to pull up article from Ali Zandi's blog and Shane's 6n.com thread. I get this. Just 2 results. I will see if I can give you more samples.

Please try the Search page to perform that search. You'll see there are a lot more than 2 search results for "6N.com" but the reason you are only seeing two results is because of where you are searching.

If you use the search box within a forum, it will only search that specific forum unless you uncheck the option "Search this forum only" (default). You can even search only a specific thread with the option "Search this thread only."

This is a common misunderstanding of how search works. If you want to search the entire website, you should click the "Search" link (to the right of "Mark All Read") under Home in the navigational menu. That's an easy way to make sure you see all the results.

Another option is to use Google with this search query:
site:namepros.com 6n.com

If you dont mind me asking, does the search bar right under the username of the home page serve the same purpose? If they serve the same purpose, whats the point of have two search options? thank you.

Ok, great. It is working.

Here are the two confusing stuffs then.

First image, I thought this would search everywhere.

Second image, this is where the action on first image leads. Everything is not actually everything. This just gave me 2 results.

These below give the correct results:

The action on above image leads to this and gives all results:

Please read the above resolution and then try again. There is no search issue. What is wrong is the way we are doing it. Re-read things above. You will understand. Thanks

I get plenty of results. You are doing something wrong. Pleas reread and even a screen shot is given how to search.

What more can we do to help?

This is wrong. Thread and posts should be selected. Not everything. Everything won't give you many results.

This is what is confusing people.

As Eric said if you click on Search near Mark all Read in Home layout, threads and posts are highlighted not Everything.

Well, this might be it. I now get 105 results for "list". Still feels low, though.

But...shouldn't "Everything" include, well, everything ? (posts, threads, convos etc)
If not, what is it ?

It's a shortcut to do quick and simple searches with a limited number of options.

The search page gives you more control.

This will search all threads and posts, but you have to deselect "Search this forum only" and make sure that "Search this thread only" is unchecked as well. By default, that quick search bar will select "Search this forum only" which is why it causes confusion sometimes.

this is where the action on first image leads. Everything is not actually everything. This just gave me 2 results.

This must be a bug. Everything is supposed to search everything as you expect. It also works fine for me, but I've confirmed the bug by logging out and running the same search. @Paul Buonopane will need to investigate and fix this for us once he has a chance.

This bug is also affecting the quick search bar because it searches "Everything" when the filters are unchecked.

Thanks for bringing this bug to our attention! :)

Another thing that doesn't work with Search (well, at least for me) is when you try to find an older conversation in your inbox. If you search in Conversations and put in the other member's name...it won't be found.

Yeah, that's another bug with search.

Try this:
 1. Visit your Inbox
 2. Scroll to and click "Conversation Display Options"
 3. Select "Started by" or "Received by" (do not select "Show all conversations" because that one is broken)
 4. Enter the username
 5. Click "Set Options"
Update: "Received by" has a bug as well where it returns all conversations Started By or Received By the username entered.

Thx ERic ! This worked. I had never noticed this label "Conversation Display Options", the colors on my monitor make it real hard to notice.

This should be somewhat better now, although searches for common terms may be slower. We're still actively working to improve search results. Unfortunately, XenForo, our forum software, doesn't do a great job of handling search functionality on large forums.
