I recently go this email from enom requesting that I transfer a name to them.

Hello,
SchuechterNet Ltd has terminated their Registrar partnership with eNom. Please issue the transfer order as soon as possible for the affected name:

So I just paid for a name and a year registration for a name through the drop. Now they want me to transfer my domain to enom directly because their partners are dropping their contracts and not supporting enom as a partner anymore.

I am curious as to why the contract was dropped and if there will be any fees to manage the name moving forward.

I can just see me getting screwed out of the is name somehow. That would be classic.

I sent an email back to enom saying no thanks I will just manage the name through the current registrar. Then I got an email back saying

The transfer will extend the term an additional year. If you prefer to work with SchuechterNet you may incur additional fees to manage the domain.

Kind regards,

Deborah

Sweet sounds like a double screw..

make sure you can manage it at the other site. do you have an account there with the domain in it?

No I haven't yet.. I am doing it right now. I emailed them 800name.com asking how it would be handled and haven't heard back. The enom folks seem pretty nonchalant about it. Like.. Oh just go ahead and send it to us and add a year to your reg.

Well what if I don't want to? What if I feel like you can't keep your current partners happy so why am I going to be. Enom is expensive and their interface is fine. Not great. I just don't like being told what to do and that I have to spend more money when I should be good to go.

At least in the past, enom had their partners make sure you could manage the domain from your enom panel. I'd check several things before making the decision. compare the enom price to the competition. See if the actual registry has real domain controls in the language you speak. See if there's anything in their TOS you can't live with. Also, consider that if you have to go to that site, will you forget the one name you have there and later lose it. For drop service that use partners who you can't bulk manage, I almost always consolidate to my preferred registrars as soon as I can. I've lost a few that fell through the cracks when I didn't. Some of the "shell" registrars may not even send you a renewal email hoping it will expire and they can make the auction money all over again.

This is often a normal procedure especially if registrars are sold that "rented out" their drop connections to eNom or Snapnames before. Under ICANN rules the registrar is still obliged to allow you to manage your domain name in the future, but which form this management takes (other than a 5 day turnaround for changes) is barely defined.

If you want to keep the name and avoid future complications, I recommend moving it. After all the new company could for example set the renewal company to be $1000 per year or so.
