Rightside has bought the .NEWS domain name extension, to be released later this year. "The .NEWS extension will offer media outlets, journalists, radio and television personalities, and online news aggregators the opportunity to distinguish themselves with short, relevant, and memorable web addresses."
Rightside CEO Taryn Naidu said, "Our acquisition of .NEWS is an exciting opportunity for businesses and news outlets of all sizes to establish themselves as dedicated, reliable sources of current information that is important to their readers and viewers. In today's 24-hour news cycle, it's more important than ever for outlets to offer their readers a recognizable, easy-to-remember online destination."
Rightside plans to launch .NEWS in 2015, along with a number of other TLDs from its growing portfolio, including .VIDEO, slated for launch in spring of this year.

Agreed.

I just know that anything.news will be reserved, at ultra/premium prices. It will be interesting to see how many will be reserved, on top of the regular premium names.

Kids.news, Tech.news, Baseball.news, you name it; probably will all be outrageously priced for investors to hold on to, or grab a lot of.

Afterhours.vet is still there at $750, sitting for months. ( @Michelle and @jdab educated me on "English", where Out of Hours is the "correct" term ;)).

Afterhours.news will probably be reserved as well, just because news hits at all times of the day.

.news certainly is intriguing, definitely a market in my opinion. Will wait to see what the reg fee is like and will hopefully pick some up.

Personally I don't see this or any other new gTLD doing well the news space, particularly within "real" news reporting, where trust is of major importance. Even many established sources on .coms face constant doubt as to the accuracy and truthfulness of what they report.

The only new real/world news publication I know of that has seen major success in recent years is Quartz (I think it started about 2 years ago). And they are located on the ultra premium LL.com domain; QZ.com... Any serious news source needs the implicit trust that follows a .com, and not the uncertainty and ambiguity that follows a ngtld.

It might be more effective for niches like tech, but there is only 1 Tech.News domain. Others will have to choose different "keyword"tech.news domains, which in that case, why not go for TodaysTechNews.com (aftermarket) or InstantTechNews.com (available for handreg) instead of TodaysTech.News.

I am not sure what those are supposed to prove? I mentioned Quartz since it is a newly established and very successful news agency, it was established in 2012. As far as I know, BBC, Telegraph, Huffington Post and Guardian are a tad bit older than that. Aside from Huff, they've been around since before the Internet! What do they have to do with the trust that follows a .com, and the realities of establishing a brand new news agency? (and the difficulties of doing so on a .whatever)

To counter my argument, you should list some new and successful news companies on ngTLDs instead, not news dinosaurs on .coms;)
