Sounds like he's pissed by the inaction of the ICA regarding domainer interests.

Sounds like Rick wanted to have more control rather than being part of a committee.

Management is earned

I will tell you my view.

Only a short while ago Afternic did a very ugly thing to all its domain members. I want to make a note here that today Afternic is now owned by a different person. When the Collin brothers owned it, they had no regard at all for the thousands of domainers who built Afternic because they sent a email announcing that hundreds of thousands of names up for sale in Afternic were now INSTANTLY going to be deleted. These names were adult in content. While I have no problem with that decision, it was the poor management stlye that showed their primary objective. If you were a domainer and you had your adult or gambling names in Afternic for sale or parked for years and years, then one day you get a email that you have to take them out immediately you too would think they have managment problems right?

Mr. Phil Collins who is now the acting President of Ica was the (with his brother) owner of Afternic at that time.

These two brothers wanted to make these changes to try to get Afternic to go public. Bottom line, for more profits they did not care to take into consideration the very people who made them who they were.

This was no little thing, as every domainer had to go thru moving all adult names out. Like I say its not that they chose to not sell adult names. The thing that pissed me and many many members off, was the fact they GAVE NO WARNING to domainers who were loyal to them. Simply one day everything adult related is getting kicked out of Afternic. Many had thousands of such names there.

If you have partners, you keep them in the loop regarding big changes. The owners of Afternic at that time did not care to do this. Phil and Michael Collins who were the owners of Afternic only cared about what they wanted, to sell Afternic and to hell with what domainers have to go thru.

So why talk about all this?

I question the management style of Mr Collins who is the paid President of Ica. I looked at his management style from the Afternic clean out and my disgust was the lazy way they went about pulling the rug out from under all their domain partners. It was a BIG inconvenience and it was a BIG loss of time and money to have to move each of these domains in less than a few days!

Their comments to us who had adult names and even gambling names that were to be kicked out of Afternic was it was the responsible thing to do as these names were immoral. They said these domains give the domain community a bad name. Don't get the impression that they cared about morality. You can be a very moral person and own these names, hell these same owners encouraged these names to sell and be parked in Afternic for years, so the sudden shift of policy had nothing to do with morals. If you had any kind of name with even a hint of gambling in the name it too was pulled. Morals?

Bullshit!

A couple weeks after the big clean out of all adult and all gambling domains, Mr. Collins, (Michael) was seen in a photo displayed in the Domain Journal from a Traffic convention with his arms and hands raking in a big pile of money he just WON GAMBLING!

Hypocrites is all I can say about the Collins brothers.

If Afternic had gave domainers a one year, or at least six months to find new parking partners and a new auction house for their domains I would be right now saying they were putting loyal domainers first. They did not.

So I have little doubt that domainers interest are being put first like Rick S. says with the prior poor organization skills and Mr. Collins lazy attidude.

That complete meltdown when this mess was happening in Afternic was a direct result of Phil and Michael Collins management style. It was all about those two managers not working with its partners in the "clean out" of adult domains.

Personally I had a hard time trying to understand WHY Mr. Collins was chosen as the President and for a paid position in Ica. That is why I have not sent a dime to them. I have no problems with Afternic now and trust Pete Plamson does not act in a way that does not take its partners into consideration when announcing new policy changes in Afternic.

This thread is not about Afternic, yet past management style of Phil Collins is used to show why I care not for the leadership of Ica today.

Sounds like Rick is looking out for domainers to me.

Get your facts right instead of writing a book-length rant that has nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Having no adult names means having less inventory means less (potential) profits..
Not more profits...DOH...so how is it "for more profits"..

And don't blame the Collins bros for the adult/gambling name removals - blame Namemedia/Buydomains (who were planning to do a IPO) who had just acquired Afternic.
Afternic never wanted to go public on its own - it is too small.

And if I recall - yes, they did give advance notice about removing such names (forget how much in advance)

Read all about it

By giving my viewpoint of Afternics management style while they owned it is not a rant.

I guess taking my sweet time to lay out why the Collins have made some poor decisions was not pointed enough for you. I suppose the fact I pointed out Michael Collins gambling only a few weeks after the gambling shut down for morality purposes went over your head too.

I was there and a prominent member of discuss names when this was all going on. Matter of fact at this precise time I was made forum member of the month. I will add I did the exact same thing that Rick S. just did regarding stepping down from Ica. I made a public post I would not accept the award as I felt Afternic did not show respect for domainers thru the sudden and rude way we had to pull hundreds of thousands of names out.

Do you want me to show a hundred posts from all the members in the forum at Afternic at the time the changes came about? Everyone was pissed, where the hell were you?

Pissed not because we did not like the new policy, but because we were not in the loop, one day the notice came and that was it. Your argument that the new owner should be blamed is more bullshit. When this decision came down it was done as the owners themselves were still in control. They might have done this for the buyout from Plamson, but the Afternic website was still being run by the Collins brothers.

You say to get my facts straight with my comment "to make more profit". You came to the conclusion I meant more profit from having less names. That is not what I said, that is your point. I made the argument that they were too quick to move along this clean out by demanding instant removal of those names for the purpose of more profits thru the sale of Afternic. They benefited by the sale, and less names was not going to make less money for them as they would not own Afternic anymore!. Seems you need to slow down and read what I say.

Maybe you are upset because you think the names should have been pulled because they were, omg.. gambling or adult.

Good for you Rick. The ICA is just a mouthpiece for companies making a killing raping domainers.

Interesting. Thanks for all the comments.

Just wondering, what CAN organizations like ICA do to help domainers, and why would they be motivated to do so? Any positives we can take away from this?

This is all very interesting, as a side note, i think you will find that Phil collins is a noted "High Roller" at Full Tilt Poker. As for the singer Phil Collins, ditto, never liked his music anyway!

Scorpion,

this is just my view and I don't have the only perspective.

Read the recent dnj. In it the owner, Ron talks about why Rick S left and he aslo talks about the reason he is still supporting Ica as he is on the board and thinks without Ica the Snowe bill would have passed with flying colors which of course would spell disaster for all domain owners.

Read Rons comments in the journal, http://www.dnjournal.com/lowdown.htm

So just like a coin there is two sides to everything and it pays to know all the details.

Putting his money where his mouth is

lets not forget like Ron states in the Dnj that Rick S was one of the original founders of Ica.

Think about how busy he is, yet he wanted to give back to domainers.

For those who say Rick only takes, you are dead wrong. Like Ron Jackson says in the Journal, if it was not for Rick S. ICA would not have even have got off the ground. He put $100,000 of his own money in to start the organization.

So if he chose to leave after laying out that kind of money you can bet he had his reasons. My hat is off to Rick S. for having the balls to make a difference and for caring about domainers.
