In reseller hosting, resellers are the people who buy large amount of space and bandwidth from the hosting company and then sell it in small parts. They don't own the server with user accounts but can still perform the most administrative functions. Reseller account is good to get started with the hosting business as it generates good revenue for the resellers.

You should opt for a reseller account if you don't know how to manage a dedicated server and you want a dedicated server at a fraction of a cost. you can upgrade to a dedicated server at anytime When your site gets more traffic and when you are capable of managing a dedicated server.

Hope this helps :)

Excellent description peter I could not have put it better myself but you also have to state that resellers also have restrictions to the resources that they can use on that server. Eventually a hosting company is either going to ask you upgrade (pay more) or move out once your resource usages on that particular server are extensive.

I wouldnt pay for the privelege to resell unless you really really want to devote your career to it.

here's a great free hosting reselling site

www.urlguru.com

You can start your hosting store immediately and it is even hosted for you. Win win win.

That's basically being an affiliate :). Almost every host has affiliate programs available to their customers ;).

No, they can't. A reseller can merely create accounts/delete accounts and setup other basic functions. Any administrative functions beyond that is left to the actual web hosting company that runs the server. As a reseller you can basically setup accounts with what ever size package you want (if overselling is permitted) and set your own limits to your clients. Its basically like renting an apartment from someone and then reselling that apartment to someone else or reselling bedrooms to someone else for them to use.

Well a reseller dose not own the server, the reseller buy's space off the aerver admin then can sell it agian but is not able to sell reseller agian (but now some host allow sub-reseller selling) they can only offer a limited amount of space, they can create acount, terminate account that they host, upgrade or downgrage account from hosting plans, make packages and edit them, view the server infomation and server status enable and disable account funtion ect. but will not be able to have the server admin controls like to restart the server or to make resllers ect

A reseller account allows you to create a number of hosting accounts within your allocated space. Everything else is similar to a standard hosting account on the server.

The name 'reseller account' is not an accurate description. It gives you the impression that you have to sell hosting services. While it is generally used for that purposes, others have used it for other purposes. For example, We have a large number of clients that purchase reseller accounts and they are not in the hosting business. They use it to create several hosting accounts for their own use. They are able to maintain their own resources and it is much cheaper than purchasing individual hosting accounts.

Being a Reseller doesn't mean you have to sell the hosting plans. Normally you are allowed to create multiple accounts.

Reseller hosting is a pretty good way to go for Design comapnies that end up handling clients' websites. Ease of setup and cost are obvious factors with this, and they certainly handle small business websites pretty well. But I do think the prevalence of reseller accounts and the prices contribute to the flood of kiddie hosts, which IMO is a downside.
