I sold my first domain on Flippa today: HongKongFlats .com

It sold for $261 which is my lowest sale so far (my average sale is around $1500). I don't actively approach end users or "flip" domains but i wanted to give Flippa a try and will share my experience with my fellow NamePro'ers!

I initially set the reserve for this domain at 500$ but with a minimum bid of $1 and a listing time of 25 days to get some first bids in. This was recommended to me by Kevin Fink who's a Community Manager at Flippa. In starting the bidding at $1, domains will receive more bids, which bounces the listing into 'Most Active' territory, which increases exposure (thus helping to generate more bids, and...the cycle continues).

The listing got 5 or 6 bids with a few hours left in the auction which i believe did helped to come up higher in the most active auction list for domains. With only 1 hour to go and the highest bid at $200 or so i decided to lower the reserve to $250 - this basically blasts out an email to everyone who bid previously or is "watching" the auction. This way the reserve was met but the auction ended with a winning bid of $261.

One mistake I've made was to set the ending of the auction at mid day local time which for me is GMT8+ Hong Kong time. This means my auction ended around midnight US time so activity on Flippa must have been at the lowest point and the emails sent by Flippa must have been unopened because previous bidders must most likely been asleep :)

I purchased this domain for $69 so minus the Flippa and Escrow fee there's still a bit of profit but the value for me on this sale was the learning experience on how (not) to sell on Flippa.

I've sold lots of names for less than $45
So long as you make a profit, that's great.

Ralph.
