I recently noticed WhoIs info of few domains showing both registry expiration and registrar expiration dates. Previously it used to show just registry expiry date?

On one of the domains, you can see the registrar expiration shows 2025 whereas the registry expiration shows 2026 (grace period)

Is it something that was already there which I didnt notice or something added new?

I noticed it on few random domains i have checked though not on all of the domains.

If its a new record, i am sure it will be very helpful in determining correctly if a domain is in grace period or renewed.

It's not just you. I just started seeing this in the last week.

The only time I've ever seen a difference is some GoDaddy regged domains were off by a day or so (going by what their system told me vs. an actual whois).

It was always like that, what you see is just a change in display (on lookup.icann.org, I assume).
If you scroll down to raw registry/registrar responses, the dates are still in separate sections.
Same if you query whois or rdap directly - different (and just one) date in registry section, different (and just one) date in registrar section.

You probably only saw it on exipiring domains, because typically that's the only case where registry and registrar expiration dates would differ. Registry would show 2026, because it has automatically collected the fee from the registrar, but the registrar would show 2025, because the customer still didn't pay and they want to underline that the domain will be deleted in the case of nonpayment.

Just noticed that today. Its not visible in normal mobile view, but shows up in landscape view or desktop view. Good to know.
