Registering (Un)expired Domain Name

Okay, I don't know much about domains. On March 2013, I registered a dot com domain on namecheap.com. A few days back, I did a whois on the domain and found that it was previously registered by another guy on godaddy and was set to expire in December 2013.

My question is how did it become available before it expired?

The previous owner canceled the registration at GoDaddy.
