Last year I inherited the administration of a number of domains at the infamous register.con. Does anyone know if there is a way to avoid this outrageous $200 transfer con?! :yell:

Do the new ICANN rules address transfer fees like this that virtually prohibit registrants from moving domain names to another registrar?

A few names expiring and I refuse to renew through this registrar. If there is a way to get by this con, help appreciated. Thanks.

Just read the post (bit slow today) and YUP, Jeff is on the money... tried same thing myself a while back and :bingo:.

Now I didnt know at the time that maybe it was the fire exit we just left by but hey.... It worked.

incidentally, my friend knows someone at register.com and he says the charge is because of the exodus of domains that were being transferred out of them a while back to godaddy / enom etc and they can justify it for all the admin time it took up (and obviously to slow the drain away from them). He also says that this migration has slowed in recent times and register are now chilling a little with regard this charge. He says they know all about the 'pull in' requests and they are cool about it.

No word yet on any pull request from register.com. Hopefully, the transfer will move forward soon and I can transfer out all of my inherited domains to a non.con registrar!

Update: Register.con phone service!

I'd like to write that this is unbelievable but it seems to be part of the ongoing con. I just received a phone call! from some phone bank claiming to be register.com offering me a very "special rate" of $29.95 to renew one of my domain names. When I explained how ridiculous that rate was, the caller informed me that many of their customers appreciated their rates and service.

I wished him well. D-:

What do you think, any chance in seeing these names transferred to a new registrar?

D-: And then the follow-up support to "complete" my order! D-:

Dear Mr. / Ms {name deleted, but note the personal touch (Mr./Ms)!}

It was a pleasure speaking to you today.

All Register.com customers must indicate that they have read,
understood and agree to be bound by Register.com's Services Agreement,
located at http: // www. register.com/service-agreement.cgi.

In order to renew a domain name through Register.com, you must
affirmatively indicate that you have read, understood, and agree to be
bound by all terms and conditions of Register.com Services Agreement,
as well as any additional rules or policies that are or may be
published by Register.com from time to time. If you do not agree to be
bound by such terms and conditions, you will not be able to register a
domain name through Register.com.

As discussed we will be calling you back to complete your order after
you have had a chance to review this information.

We look forward to speaking with you then.

Sincerely,
Customer Support
(my red emphasis added)

==> ADD:
Just received confirmation that the domain name has been transferred. No notice from registrar . com but no problem for me about that. Kudos to the registrar for coming through on this. Hopefully I won't be finding any $200 transfer fees in my account anywhere! :tri:

Get the rest of them out of there proff and then just ditch that account - no need to put yourself through the same hassle over and over.

One more on the way for now. A few others have another year on them. The last one, unfortunately, is a .ws and cannot be transferred.
