I have recieved an enquiry regarding one of my dot com domains from the ceo of a social network organisation.

the enquiry was along the lines of - is this domain for sale and if so how much do you want for it.

I have completed some research and the email address resolves to the dot com name of the author and the whois info is correct.

I responded along the lines that if an offer was forthcoming I may be interested in commencing negotiations. I also ventured that I felt the name had some merit as a devloped site.

The name is two words, a recent sale with the prefix of my name achieved $xx,xxx , not suggesting mine is worth such a price.

Any suggestions on where I go from here would be appreciated

What else can you do except wait for the reply?

Wait for a few days, and then send him a courtesy email asking whether he received your 1st email and if he would like some more information?. Apart from that, it's a waiting game, it could be that since he's the CEO, that he's busy too so maybe hasn't had time to check his email!.

good luck

I agree about waiting for a reply, but isn't it a bit odd that the CEO is writing directly? Have you researched the buyer - is it a large company, or an SMB?

If it has anything over 200 employees, I would think that the CEO would have delegated the acquisition out to someone in either IT, marketing/communications or perhaps a legal department...

No? Just wondering.

I am confident as to the authenticity of the enquirer, The approach was on a personal level as distinct from a corporate approach. Not much more that I can offer other than the business is well established, popular and has a following of +/- 800k enquires/visits per month.

I will wait this out, as I am in no rush to do a deal at this stage.

Thanks for your advice/comments, much appreciated.

I would wait, since it appears you replied with a nice professional message.

You have done well to research the potential buyer, but you may want to do more. If the company is doing well, they will have more of a budget for the domain. Since you were contacted by the CEO, I would venture that they are not overly experienced at buying domains and may be in a situation where they have made extensive plans, but did not look into getting the domain until a late date. All of this points in your favor in setting a sales price.

It sounds like your domain is 3 words, and that may make the price less, but being related to a domain that sold for $xx,xxx is nice. I would run the domain through Estibot.com and see what it says. If you like the price, then I would go with that. Generally Estibot is way high or way low. But if it's high you may be able to use that as justification for the price you ask. This CEO may not know Estibot is not to be "trusted".

I always advise sellers to be professional, responsive, but don't chase after the buyer. Once you start going after them it may be ok, but it may also be seen as "weakness" and a signal they can pressure you to lower your price.

Remember that when a potential buyer contacts you, they are interested in the domain. What you need to determine, and it's not always easy, is just HOW interested they are.

If you can talk about related or simular domains and what they sold for or what they are being offered for that can help. And if you can provide income and traffic numbers that may also help. If a domain they want is currently getting traffic, then that should be $$ to them right from the start rather than getting some domain where the traffic starts from zero. :)

Thanks for your advice, much appreciated. Just a waiting game for now. It would seem that this org has considered a considerabvle number of domains, perhaps they have moved on.

It's been just one week.
I've had one enduser come back year later!

Yes, patience is a virtue !

Is it possible to ascertain if there is a back order on a registered name ?

Also if its helps try to add the registering date of expiry to 2,3 years plus. That will cut off any possible hope for them of a drop. :p
