I was wondering what sort of strategy you guys have for making money with your domain names.

Do you tend to flip them quickly for a little profit, or sit on them and wait for the big bang?

I tended to sit on mine, even declined some reasonable offers, until I needed the cash to fund a website development, at which point I listed a whole bunch of .us names on the Afternic Bazaar. None of these names had ever had offers.

Turned out I flipped 20 or so names very quickly for about a 50-100% profit, meaning about $15 average sale price per domain. They were all reg fee initially.

The downside: a lot of menial transfer work for not such a big hourly salary :(

The conclusion: If you need cash quickly and have decent names, may be worth letting them go for cheap.

But as a long term strategy I think I will mainly sit on them and wait for a substantial offer, if only because of the amount of work involved in making these little sales. I make more per hour with my day job (I should hope!)

Any thoughts?

agree. Only let names go cheap if you don't intend to keep them.

Flipping is best when dealing with names worth more than $1000. Those who are best at flipping often have very large budgets and very good contacts.

I keep trying at flipping but I wouldn't recommend it to most people. Very time consuming and hard work to cover your costs. I like flipping for branding purposes and building trust.

Some people do well by working within multiple domain markets and finding non popular domains from one market that are popular within another. Easier said than done.

well i like flipping names quickly for profits of 50%-100% or more

it might be because i have till now never fell in love with any particular domain .

there is always a better domain in the market which u can get cheaper

Both, quick flip only works with names that are known to have value (lll, generics etc), and i sit on those that most people wouldnt even take at regfee, but an end user pays 8k$..

If you play your cards right, flipping can help you build a Customer Base really fast. Save the email address of the people you sell to, as these are known Domain Buyers! Currently I have a direct contact list of over 700 domain buyers. This alone will pay off for you.

In the short, I flip more than I hold. It's always fun to have new stock. lol

I think it depends on your budget as well. If you're just starting out and don't have a lot of money, flipping is definitely a good way to build up your bankroll so to speak. If you don't have much money, you need to be taking actions that will generate income, not ones that will be an expense. Sitting on a domain is an expense. I tend to flip most of my domains, but there are a few I pick up that I find particularly promising to hold on to and I won't sell those unless I get a good offer.

If you've got enough money to buy and hold, thats usually the best route, especially if it's in an area where there is a history of steady increases in value (lll.com, etc..).
