Question re: Search results order

Can someone explain what determines the order of search results from google or yahoo?

For example, I searched "flight attendant". Why does it list several sites that do not list either search term in the domain name before it lists one that does? Makes me wonder, if you have a site catering to flight attendants (which I don't), and you want to be near the top of a search results list, domain name doesn't seem to be the most important thing.

Alot of it has to do with the popularity of the site and also how many links are linking to it. Say you have a site called dogs.com and they wrote an article on flight attendants, it might score higher that a newish site called flightattendants.com.

Hope this helps a little, not an expert, just sharing with you what i have found.

You are exactly right, the domain name is not the most important thing. But it does have some weight so it's good to get a domain with good keywords.

Not just links, but the keywords used for the link are a factor. And of course what keywords are on the site, where, how used, and how many times all play a part.

Exactly "how" all of this and more works is a secret that we try to guess at. Then they change how it works...
