Page Rank and Search Results

I am familiar with the term "page rank" and how to view a sites PR using my google toolbar. My questions is: how does this relate to where your site is displayed within search results?

I think I would rather rank within the first page of a prime search term as opposed to simply having a high PR rank - any thoughts? I'm sure both measurements correlate to some extent.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I dont understand that part of it either. I think it should go by the number of visitors your site gets like it used to.

PageRank was designed by the founders of Google at Stanford in 1998, it is described in freely distributed manuscripts.

You can find all the original PageRank articles here [1]. You can download the original (click PDF in the top right) here [2]. You can find the first description of Google here [3] and an easy to understand Wikipedia entry here [4].

PageRank hasn't changed much over the years, and is pretty much still as described. What -has- changed, however, is how Google has incorporated PageRank into it's results. It appears that it's not as important as it used to be. Contextual analysis, keyword density, age of website (perseverance?), freshness of content, and frequency of update all seem to play a role now. Google doesn't publish the details anymore, or they'd face some unnecessary competition.

It should help your search rankings, but only a bit. Higher PR does mean higher ad cost though, which should help your site a bit.

Interestingly enough I have seen high PR sites that do not have a high search engine placement in search results (listed from 20 up). This is normally the case with MSN and Yahoo. Google, in my opinion and findings, pays more attention to PR and as such places websites in search results with higher PR in the top 20 results.
