Hi I am a newbie to this but have spent the last few days reading lots and lots of information about domain flipping etc. There is one thing though that I just don't get - it's to do with localised targeting for example if I registered hotelsin (cityname).com or taxisin (cityname).com then spent some time trying to improve rankings etc, who should I target for a potential sale? If I emailed all the hotels/taxis in the city, 90-95% of them will probably already have their own website so should I be offering them this in addition to theirs? I can't see what the attraction would be to those companies that already have websites? Thanks in advance for any advice.

You should target those companies both with and without websites. Your selling points are a better domain, more appropriate, additional traffic.

You could sell them add-on services if they are noobs. Like website creation etc. Or offer to switch their old website to the new domain.

Thanks for the advice. Hmmm so taking the example of living in Hitsville. If I were to own (for arguments sake) lawyersinhitsville dot com then I initially thought ah yes, just email all the lawyers in hitsville and say hey look at this fantastic domain name you could have (and beforehand I can optionally try and improve its SEO etc). So then I get an email back from Faulkner & Sons solicitors who say hey yes, nice idea but we already have faulkners dot com which is a known name because of the name of our business. I get what you are saying that they could maybe have both, or have my new one which redirects to their existing one?

Its almost like hitsvillelawyer dot com (ie the singular version) would be a better attempt - lawyersinhitsville almost implies its just a directory list of several companies?

Thanks again.

i say no, because you offer nothing of real value, if they already have their own website.

if you build up a domain with content and get ranking, then why not capitalize on it....rather than trying to sell.

then you'd have an income stream, which would become an asset.

you seem to give good reasons why the plan would face defeat.

and you should listen to yourself closely, because it's sound advise

"lawyersinanywhere", does sound like a directory

but a domain like "hitsvillelawyer" would be offering value to a lawyer in hitsville, even if they already had their own website.

a developed directory would have value only if the lawyer wanted to be listed on it, where the site would need to have viable traffic numbers to justify listing fee's.

imo...

Your example falls down on all three of these selling points. You should knock them off your list of potential clients and move onto the next one. Also you need to be registering domains people actually want. I would think that there are very few lawyers in htisville who would want the domain lawyersinhitsville.com unless you have a compelling sales argument thought out.
