If say the .Net of a domain I'm looking at is considered Premium by Godaddy, is the .mobi version worth getting?

IMHO you are really asking two questions:

A. Are all domains listed as 'Premium' on GoDaddy decent domains, and

B. If the .net is a decent domain, is the .mobi worth getting.

My own answers would be as follows, but others may well disagree:

A. No

B. Not always (just as it's not always worth registering the .net alternative of a decent quality .mobi)

Even if it weren't for this, you would need to define the level of 'safety margin' you require for any domain to be classed as worth registering.

For instance, many people wouldn't bother registering domains that are not worth more than say a hundred dollars.

In other words, this is bound to be a really difficult question to answer in the absence of more infrmation.

No.

I do not think you should take the 'premium' designation into consideration. It may or may not be worth registering in .mobi.

MeetPeoples.com is one such name I would not register in .mobi.

The 'premium' at godaddy is just a fancy way of saying somebody else has already registered that name, they are trying to sell it, and we are willing to help them. Really not much different then seeing a name for sale at sedo.

agreed, but most of the time i would take that name, hence i searched for it.
now it may not be spectacular or worth the xxxx they try for, but 9/10 worth the reg fee. if the name has a mobile use/application (ok to be creative/out of the box) i say reg it. you can pm me and then reg it or you can reg it and then post/pm me and possibly return within the 5 day window.

*be advised that often registrars will try to screw you on that return window and you should request the refund within 24/36 hours to be safe.

thanks for the advice
I'm currently looking at a few domains with all extensions regged except the .net and the .mobi (and maybe .name) and the .net is classified as Premium.

Example of this is Feudal.mobi, which I don't really see any value in but its unregged right now if anyone wants it =p

If the rest are of the same caliber as feudal.mobi, I would just say No.

I agree with PV above in principle, but allnicksgone is also right: the premium thing is often a red herring - it looks like the valuations (which together with the commission level offered by the registrant determine whether a domain shows up as premium) are automated - which means they often place an unwarranted premium on a useless dictionary word - simply because the technology is still in its infancy.

I'd say Feudal is probably the worst :hehe:

IMO, there is nothing left good enough to warrant a registration. Maybe a few exceptions here and there, but overall no.

somone/something is really selling off the .nets by the way, around 5-10% of my searches are bringing a premium net for sale.

I would have to disagree with that. There are not even
a million registered mobis yet. Sure all good one worders are
gone but fantastic 2 and 3 word combos are there if you
search hard enough :imho:

I can't find anything left I would want to reg bro. But then again, I look for 500+ wordtracker and a lot of other qualifiers. Some stuff left, yeah. Not anything for me.

I know of a handful of 2 word availables with ovts
from 20k to 40k just waiting to be regged. I have
enough mobis for now but cant give them away in
case I change my mind. The point being that good
names are out there :)

Keithmt,

I agree. There still are a lot of good names to be regged.

buy 3 word .coms instead imho , these mobi auctions for premiums are NOT an indication of the REAL values of mobis that regular domainers own. very few of us are making that kind of $$ on our mobis for sale from what I can determine.
