Hi,

I'm a bit confused about 08.com which is up for bidding at Sedo and is mentioned in this forum also.

If you go to Godaddy and do a search on 08.com it shows it as "an invalid domain name" at the top (when a whois shows it as regd at godaddy). Other registrars variously show it as taken, available or as invalid and estibot shows it as available (and worth regfee btw lolazif).

I've also come across this before where I've tried to register certain types of domain names and I get that it's an invalid domain name. How did this person manage to register 08.com? Godaddy right now still sees it as invalid syntax but it was registered there!

you can no longer register 1/2 char domains in .com and some other extensions,

not sure which year that started.

abviously you were able to reg them at 1 point, and like you noticed the availblility varies depending on where you check.

a flaw in there sytem/s.

not the best explanation but i think i got it ?

yeah , 2 char registrations were allowed in the beginning but were restricted some years ago

people that owned a 2 char domain before the restriction are allowed to renew them though

also check this wikipedia article about single letter domains

only a handful were allowed many many years ago

most were restricted because internet administrators back then worried that if servers for .com became overloaded from the possible vast future traffic they could imploy subdomains like a.com , b.com , etc to ease the burden on the servers

nowdays the technology advances have rendered these concerns useless and ICANN even thought about auctioning off single letter domains back in 2005

(the article also mentions about 2 letter domains)
