Confused about GoDaddy's back ordering service

This is the first time I've done this, and I'm a bit confused about it.

I just found a .com that was registered with gd, and in redemptionPeriod

It was listed as "$18.99 - Backorder now", so I worked through the payment screen, payed my $18.99, and now the domain is marked as 'Not available'.

Why would it go from being 'Backorder' then after I've paid my money, it move to 'Not available' ?

When I try to find the underlying registry data, it shows:

[No match for "aerlfeirbiefbrifasleisurnhcwrhnf.com" in the registrar database.

Registry Status: redemptionPeriod]

I am not sure what they mean by "not available" but it shows usually for domains which are pending delete, if godaddy grabs it you'll get the name...

That is not really true. If it is registerred at Godaddy, you won't get the name. They will send it to TDNam whether you have a backorder or not. In fact, if it expires, it will now be on auction for the entire week with 1 bid, yours. You would have been better off not ordering a backorder, waiting for it to be sent to TDNam, and then just placing a last minute bid.

Otherwise, their back-ordering service seems like a bit of scam.

GoDaddy's backorder service isn't very good. It can't compete with the big drop catchers or tasters. Although it will have good success at grabbing domains finally dropped by tasters.

As to this specific situation. We'd really need to know how long since it expired. GoDaddy's backorders will only kick in between the regular and firesale ($5) auctions for that domain. So if it's on TDNAM, it's much better to bid for it at auction than to backorder it. If it's gone past the firesale without being bought. It WILL drop. GoDaddy would be competing with all the other dropcatchers and taster when it drops. Which, as I've said. they're not very good at.

This is what I've managed to get from Moniker about the domain. Am I right in saying, it should drop after 70 days of experation?

It's not arrived at tdnam yet.

That's 2 months already. It's already been through TDNAM and wasn't picked up. Yes it'll drop approx 70 days after expiry, plus 5 days pending delete. As I said. GoDaddy are not great at catching their own dropping domains because they are competing against the big dropcatchers and tasters. They will eventually capture the domain if it's picked up by a taster (or 2 or 3) who eventually drops the domain. So you should leave the backorder on the domain for a month (or 2). Which you could have done for yourself without wasting your money on a backorder. After it drops. If it's not picked up by a large dropcatcher or taster, GoDaddy will capture the domain. If it's picked up by a dropcatcher, your chances are slim because it almost certainly means someone has backordered the domain. If it's picked up by a taster, then you should watch the whois every 5-6 days.

As a side comment. It's only $4.99 to join TDNAM.
