9292.nl is first numeric domain name to be assigned.

SIDN, the .nl registry, has today announced that purely numeric .nl domain names will be available to everyone from 28 February 2008 12.00 hrs (CET). Numeric domain names are names made up entirely of numbers (e.g. 1234.nl), or of numbers separated by hyphens (e.g. 12-34.nl). In the first few days after registration begins, SIDN expects a ‘landrush’ of people racing to get the ‘best’ combinations. The registry has therefore put special measures in place to prevent its systems becoming overloaded. Full details of the start-line arrangements can be found at www.sidn.nl.

Between 1 and 14 December 2007, trademark and trading name owners were given the opportunity to reserve the corresponding domain names before general registration began. The first name to be reserved in the context of this ‘sunrise period’ for numeric .nl domain names was 9292.nl, which was assigned to the organisation 9292.

The travel information provider was very pleased to secure its purely numeric name. ‘The new domain name will make things more straightforward for the consumer. Once it goes live, people won’t have to remember to include the letters ‘OV’ when they want to access our services. Since more than half of the Dutch population know us simply as 9292, that means we’ll be easier to find for computer users and mobile users. In other words, becoming the first owner of a numeric .nl name, 9292 will be in a better position to realise the objective of providing as much travel information as possible to as many people as possible making car and public transport journeys in the Netherlands. The purely numeric domain name is something we’ve wanted for the last four years, and we are grateful to SIDN and the wider Internet community for making it possible. We can’t wait for the opportunity to start making use of 9292.nl,’ said Communications Manager Aarnout Mijling.

I thought that Netherlands was an advanced Country especially in the internet.....I won`t say that looking at this...

Payment method
Wire transfer
Bank debit (only available in Germany)

:td:

I`m quite disappointed, there are many Dutch Registrars offering as low as 4 Euros each .NL but none is really good or does not have Ebglish interface or like this one.....payment methods are not the fastest.

Landrush to be done again!

(translated from the Dutch news website Nu.nl - 3/22/2008):
SIDN intervene after debacle Dutch numerical fields

SIDN have taken away from two Internet companies a large number of numerical field names which they had registered by the end of February. The foundation intervention came after a storm of criticism of other providers on the ' hijacked ' recording procedure.

SIDN, the foundation which is responsible for the issue of Dutch field names, opened by the end of February the recording of the so-called numerical fields, internet addresses which exclusively figures exist, as 123.nl. thereby the rule applied which ends up first, which first grinds. Two companies had put however enormous computer capacity at the start of the recording. They levied with that such a heavy attachment on the recording systems of SIDN, that other providers did not get or hardly connection. When that eventually succeeded, most attractive names had been already forgiven. One company, which runs an online photograph service, could this way register 2579 numerical register fields, among which 1604 of the fields of 0 up to and including 2100.nl.

A research of trade association ISPConnect indicated last week that 97 per cent of the questioned internet providers found the procedure dishonest. 67 per cent found that the recording had to be repeated. Initially the SIDN did not want to do that. The foundation thought that no rules were broken. However the foundation changed their mind last Friday. According to their own research "two parties had significant more machines used than the remaining parties and because of this much of the requested field names were registered." For this reason the issue of 4060 numerical fields have reversed. Those are later again offered for recording. SIDN say will use stricter rules at future recording procedures.

A day after the landrush a lot of complains were made on the way the landrush took place. Most people that wanted a numeric domain had nothing, while 2 other big companies had snatched thousands of domains. I've read that 1 company, mijnalbum.nl, had invested 30.000euro in servers to snatch as many of these domains as posible. A day after the landrush i remember SIDN had made a presspaper saying the landrush was succesfull, no big problems bla bla bla, and now suddenly we hear this news that the landrush is need to be done over. Very strange to me...
