With all the new GTLDs rolling out, I'd like to list the pros & cons:

Pros of .com:
  • Ingrained in the minds for now
  • Inexpensive

Cons of .com:
  • "com" isn't a valid word and is not descriptive, thus defeating the purpose of not using IP numbers.
  • Everything "good" is taken or squatted

Pros of new GTLDs:
  • Descriptive & catchy
  • Can get what you want or close to it

Cons of new GTLDs:
  • Risk initially of losing visitors to the .com version
  • More expensive renewals so far
  • At the mercy of Donuts, etc. whatever they want to do

Why will any major Company switch from .com to a new gTLD extension they won't.
They will register the new gTLD's to protect their brand.

Uuuhh who do think is pushing these new gTLDs the most?

Major Companies laid down the money to offer the registrations and they're definitely going to be putting them in the public eye

This list of reserved keywords (words that cannot be registered as domains in new gTLDs) might be of use.

Even without reference to registry-published statistics, we all run across .ORG websites pretty much daily. They're everywhere. And they tend to choose .ORG deliberately. So do I as an end user.
The .ORG is quite healthy in relation to other TLDs but it is still a non-core TLD with most countries focused around .COM/.ccTLD. That axis can often represent 80% or more of a country's domain footprint.

Yes, but a lot of the .NET sites are quite new. The other day, I gathered a list of advertisers for a particular server niche. That was in connection with one of my domain auctions. About 1 out of 3 had branded itself on .NET instead of .COM. And I personally know programmers who favor .NET ahead of .COM for their tech-related sites.
It is an ideal fit for tech and internet related websites as it is close to the original focus of the TLD. The most common registration pair (by the same registrant) is the .COM/.NET of their domain term. Many of the sites in .NET will be pointed to their .COM or .ccTLD equivalent. The .NET as the primary brand is not unusual though.

You really think that's what happened?

Yes, some major companies paid for control of their own company brand name as a TLD. But was that their idea? Or did consultants -- after ICANN approved this wave of vanity TLDs -- go after the big companies and convince them (for a hefty fee) that they needed to this?

Yes, some companies who paid for the privilege will use their brand name TLD. Some of those will even put it in front of the public. But what is the average Joe meant to infer from this? Should he begin randomly typing in company names as extensions hoping to get to their sites? That won't work very well!

Or should he magically infer that certain english words like "ninja" and "plumbing" are extensions while somehow guessing that words like "knight" and "electrician" are not? No, these company brand name extensions will really only promote that company's brand name.

I think your long list of quirky domains as a banner ad is too much... please just pick one. Thanks

Honestly, there's really only 1 reason for me to visit domain forums. And that's to promote whichever auctions I have live at the moment. So I'll use my allowed signature space for ads and measure the results.

While I'm here, of course, I'll try to share my experience (such as it is) with the new guys as thoroughly and honestly as I can. But if the time spent in the forums doesn't translate into bids, then I probably won't be able to take time from my work to hang out in the forums any longer.

TV shows are brought to you by ads, right? Well, my participation in the forums is brought to you by sales. Or else, I go off the air.

Could you just get a .domains and say "My domain portfolio: Portfolio.domains" :)
