We all have faith in .tvs, and as well as selling, I see them as a good investment. But I do object to the bias Sedo seem to have against them.

I spoke with sedo last week about .tvs, and they said that they would definitely be interested in a .tv auction in the future- so it seems things may change. I suggest that we get together, and maybe petition Sedo. With a list of perhaps five quality names each, we should have about 250 very good names to auction.

They have recently held a round the world auction, and are promoting .co.uks so with a little push, maybe we can boost .tvs there. They may say no, or it may create little interest, but I think its worth trying.

What do you all think?

Ben

I think that people will submit premium names and not saying anything about it. The auction would proceed and then a lot of the sales will fall through because of the negligent sellers.

Sedo would then probably stop the listing of TV alltogether until the pricing on premiums is cleared up both on Enom/Demand/Verisign, and Sedo listing methods.

So while I would love to see it, I think it would cause more harm then good right now.

Really like the idea of a .tv auction at Sedo, although, like Bulldog mentions, the premium prices must be listed in a way that it's really clear for any potential bidder!

Just noticed steam.tv is at auction without mentioning the $500 renewal fee, so probably the new buyer backs out after noticing this fee and is disappointed, nobody wins, not the buyer, not the seller and definetely not .tv :|

Its not difficult for sedo to have a rule, which would insist the seller lists if the name is premium or not- and if so how much the fee is.

It's worth a try Ben, let me know what we have to do.

more power to you ben! bang on those doors! i have been doing this since last year-

moniker (monte): i emailed richard last summer to do something- never heard back (mind you i never mentioned richard)

godaddy (a s s wipes) thank you for bringing a new product suggestion to our attention!

fabulous: we do not support .tv as of yet, would not make sense to hold an auction

sedo- never replied (duh)

ebay: never replied (double duh)

afternic- we have already planned out our auctions for the year

i even contacted places like blip and brightcove- didnt even get it. so i am HAPPY you are doing this because this is what i sit here and do.

There are two sides always in an auction: seller and buyer. We have an abundance of sellers but limited amount of buyers that meet price expectations of sellers. Some of these price expectations that sellers have are created by low or high renewal rates that affect their personal pricing model and/or random sales that obviously went to either a deep investor or enduser. I don't feel that we are at the point where an auction can be successful at this time, at least not in the realm of where we would like to see sales prices be for generic keyword .tv domains. Most people still are unaware of .TV let alone know about the varying pricing structure. Good news is that more and more people are becoming aware of the extension:) Part of that is the growing audience of companies embracing .TV and the other is the individual efforts of .TVers/developers/promoters. The fact that you, Smash, and others are spending the time to promote and call major venues requesting for an auction says something very positive about the future.

It all comes back to the basic economics of supply and demand. I would also like to see an auction of high magnitude but a successful auction will happen only if and only if there is strong demand and less supply, imo. We saw it happen right before our eyes once, when the geo .tv market exploded, now we just need to see it other verticals. It will happen, we just need to be patient, imo.

agree, to a point.

no one outside our little world knows what mobi or asia is- but that didnt stop those prices from being paid on undeveloped extensions- and .tv is not undeveloped.

i honestly think, for the very best turnout, it should go the route of a videocentric auction, with other extensions, but focusing on the niche. you will see more buyers, and overall more sales- thus, more awareness.

I agree to a point Sanchay, but what better way to inform people of .TV than if a major auction house like Sedo was to do this.
We have seen decent sales once a name has gone to auction ,like ntv.tv, fussball.tv,debtconsolidation.tv,jeu.tv,fix.tv etc,so we know that the names can sell for good prices.
I think it would be good for .TV and if the names were right i can see some big sales there.

For the record, FIX.TV did not sell

My apologies, ok no problem but you get the point, it was one of many good sales.

Yes, I would agree there have been some nice sales that have been reported, but just remember that to have an auction of that magnitude can do more damage than good if it were not successful. Of course, what is success? It is different for everyone, but I would think success to a major venue in the likes of Moniker, Sedo, etc would be the commission they made.

Smash, in regards to .mobi, not too versed on .asia, .mobi had a lot of press on major blogs and elsewhere throughout the internet as well as some company support. .Mobi itself took a proactive approach to send the message out. .TV is different, imo. Remeber the HRTS auction? Some great names were sold like Kids.tv, not many bidders and not much promotion. JohnTV just sold Booze.tv, great name imo and theoretically should have gone for much more. Great name for many things to include for the consulting giant Booze Allen. A lot of forces need to come together in a successful auction, kind of like saying the stars need to be aligned. If the stars are aligned (press, exposure, demand, low supply of quality names, wide usage, traffic etc) you will have big sales and a successful auction, imo. Just my opinion folks. I personally think it will happen and we are getting closer last I check my telescope.

yes, you are right with that- mobi, asia- have the extension backing the auction. and you are right, a bad auction can be, well, bad.

with that being said tho, names were sold at crazy prices, based on an unknown extension, regardless of the backing. you are talking companies, seasoned domainers, spent alot of money, on the unknown. literally, the unknown.

in agreeing with you, i do think there is the disadvantage of demand media not doing anything, nor would it, for the auction- hence not getting the word out to the intended industries. now moniker- he does that.

in fact, i am surprised at this point, that dm has not jumped on this premium name auction crap like mobi and asia did, just to sell cumbubbles.tv.

.

and bennyboy- understand something- sedo is biased against anything not com- they only thing that helps them see passed that biased is green glasses. and they made a ton of $$$$ with mobi, they even made some dough with .nu. .nu!
but, the backing goes beyond promotion, if you know what i mean. i can bet my 3 kids and 2 dogs if richard knocked on tims door with a care package that caused an upgrade in tims cigars, there would be a .tv auction planned, no sweat.

I will answer that with a well known cliche: "Where Donald Trump buys, people buy everything around it."

SKG (commented): "Yes, I would agree there have been some nice sales that have been reported, but just remember that to have an auction of that magnitude can do more damage than good if it were not successful".

ME (response): "Exactly my thoughts". It is happening right before our eyes...everyone just needs to develop what they can and keep promoting when they have the opportunity. The reality is, with time .TV will be just fine... Major players like moniker have basically ignored .TV as if it were not real. Dnjournal doesn't report .TV premiums? Some "industry leaders" say, "it's not doing so hot right now"...LOL...I love that line.

What I suggest is 40 or 50 of us select our 5 best names. We as a group could vet some of each others on the basis of quality or premium price.

This list, once agreed could be referred to as "THE LIST"!!!!

I can then speak to sedo, and hopefully we can speak to other organisations also.
This all sounds nice and maybe a bit naive, but hopefully it will result in something.

Somehow I think you'll be waiting a long time for this. Where is the money from sedo's point of view and why would they single out one extension for its own auction? Dnjournal has reported a grand total of one .tv sale of 5 figures this year so there isn't exactly alot of money to be made for them.
