.tv Premium Names: Pure coincidence or something fishy?

Watch
A few months ago when I decided to get my 1st premium names, I came across 2 names that were available for a long time. So I started negotiating with Demand Media for the best deal. Once I was ready to buy, I emailed them saying I will proceed with both names & was told one name, the one that was the best & I really wanted, just got taken. I still managed to get one of the premiums, which is the only premium I now own.

Then, about 2 weeks ago, I found another name that was of interest to me, which has been available for a long time. After a number of emails negotiating the renewals, I sent an email saying that I was prepared to proceed with the deal that I was offered in the 2nd email if that deal was still available. I then got a message saying sorry, but the name has just been sold for full list price.

Out of the 3 names that I had interest in, 2 of them have been apparently regged by someone else just when I wanted to reg them.

Has this happened to anyone else or is it just me? Does that seem like pure coincidence?

I doubt its anything but a coincidence. I suppose you can check the whois and watch the names. Either way, DM wouldn't pull a stunt like that. They would be honest and tell you the deal is no longer available if they didn't want to sell you the name.

I agree with Allthings, it's a coincidence in my opinion.

When I made deals with Verisign / Enom, I always asked if they could 'lock' the name(s) involved as the negotiations and also a bank wire takes days and often over a week. Maybe that's an idea to do as well in any possible future .tv deals you like to do.

Jason told me that when you request a name they pull it off and reserve while he talks to Verisign. But he also told me that if Verisign thinks they can get full value for the domain then they will not cut you a deal. It is really a name by name case by case basis.

So what's the status now, did someone really reg the domain?

it's a conspiracy. The bush administration is buying up all the premiums to keep them away from the terrorists.

I would actually say that if someone is dinging me for discounts on a product, it is a safe bet that someone else will come along and not try and get a discount, so DM either thinks you are a lowballer, or they actually got a buyer. Either way, they want full price.

Sometimes you are not the only one negotiating on a domain and someone else will buy it before you do... its happened to me too HTML.

Well see, I expressed this concern, and I asked Jason, "If I request a name, can someone else come along and snag it while I am waiting?" and he specifically says, "No, when you ask for a name for price review, I pull it off and reserve it and then come back to you with information on what Verisign will do for you. No one can get it while I am doing this".

They will only do that if you agree with a certain cost that you will reg it, otherwise they will keep it open to public.

All I'm saying is that it seems very strange that a name has been sitting there for a long time on their premium list with nobody regging it, then twice when I get to the end of the negotiations, & say I'll buy it, I get an email from Jason that it has been taken.

If that's the case, when I started the negotiations, Jason should've pulled it off the list & reserved it so that would mean that nobody else would be able to buy those 2 names.

See I was told that is how it worked, because I made it clear I was superstitious about showing interest in a name. He told me not to worry.

So you inquired about a name specifically to Jason, and he said he would get back to you?

How long ago was this?

All this too and fro on the coincidences of premium price jacking/ names going after interest been shown on a name leads to the bigger and ultimate question.

Does DM play fair and keep their word on deals????? Plain and simple question.

We all know who the DM apologists are (few I may add) on this forum and other blog, but there is irrefutable evidence that they quoted one price to a major buyer of the .TV extension for a name prior to the release of the names back in May 07, ad then jacked up the price by more than a pretty penny......

This oh, let me get back to you and see what i can do for youwith Verisign is one of the oldest games in the book - "trust me I amon your side...but what could I do , my bosses wouldnt allow me to give you the discount......."

If you get a good discount - its been a good day - if not, its just been one of those days where even the cornflakes you had at the start of the day were out of date.....

Looks like it. The 2nd name that got taken, on the day I got the email that it was already taken I checked the Whois & it still said TV Corp, then the next day, it was the same. It wasn't until 2 days after that someone's name was in the Whois.

How long ago was this?

I enquired about 2 weeks ago & was in negotiations with a number of emails back & forth.

My 1st contact was when there was the email to everyone saying that they could do better deals now with more "flexibility" in pricing. I emailed & ask what's the best deal for some names I had interest in. He replied with their standard deal of 2 years full price then 50% discount & said would that work for you? I said if that's the best you can do, I'm not interested. Then he proposed a little better deal, would that work for you? I tried to negotiate a bit more from there with a few more emails. I didn't see them offering any better deals so then I decided to email & said it that deal is still on, I'll take it. About 3 days later (I sent the email on Friday) I was told that someone had just taken it at full list price.

Agreed. If Demand Media doesn't know what deal they can offer for a name, it seems very unprofessional to offer a certain price, ask will this work for you, then if you accept, they'll contact the Registry to try & get approval.

If you're gonna offer a deal, you should know the absolute best deal that can be offered without offering something then needing to get approval.
