The authorities of Ukraine turned to the ICANN with a request to block the domain zone .ru and other domain zones of Russia.
Is it possible to block all domain names owned by Russians, that is, in zones .com .org .uk , etc.?
Now there are restrictions and sanctions for Cuba and Iran for the zones .cu .ir .
Probably there are restrictions for other states. But how wide are they? Can similar or even greater sanctions be applied to Russia?

Some would argue that, yes their leaders & the sanctions got them to be literally hungry. But, what about the nuclear weapon he now has? Wasn't that the objective of sanctions? To prevent it from happening?

I don't know, but I can't imagine sanctions have a great success rate.
Their were under some kind of sanctions from the very beginning, but if you sacrifice food, health and everything else, probably you can keep the army, but with what cost and if people can sacrifice themselfs. The north-koreans made it, but at what cost? When they reach south, they are like in a dream, most of them can't adapt to anything. So, the question is, it is worth it? It would not be better to change the regime, bring an democratic government and start competing with US as a democratic super power, so that everybody will be happy.

The main goal of a dictator is to brainwash his country people. The main goal of Putin now is to block any external information source to russians, making only available to them RT and Sputnik TV, where he can lie like he wants to the face of russian people.
He really doesn't want that russians see the reality of the war crimes he is already commiting in Ukraine. He knows that if russian people see the mass bombing and the massacre he is provoking right now to the ukrainian people, their brothers, then he would be in problems to maintain his power in Russia.
I really think that there's a big amount of russians already brainwashed by Putin's lies, really believing all the sh*t they watch on russian State TV.

UA has the following L-Root instances:

  • aa.ua-kiv.l.root (Kharkiv)
  • aa.ua-iev.l.root (Kyiv)
  • aa.ua-ods.l.root (Odessa)

You can check which root server instance you are talking to, by issuing the following command:

$ dig @l.root-servers.net id.server chaos txt +short

ICAAN responded regarding domain names:

ICANN is an independent technical organization that manages the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN is a facilitator of the security, stability, and resiliency of these identifiers with the objective of a single, global, interoperable Internet. In our role as the technical coordinator of
unique identifiers for the Internet, we take actions to ensure that the workings of the Internet are not politicized, and we have no sanction-levying authority. Essentially, ICANN has been built toensure that the Internet works, not for its coordination role to be used to stop it from working.

As you know, the Internet is a decentralized system. No one actor has the ability to control it or shut it down. ICANN’s primary role, through the functions of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), is to ensure the consistent and unique assignment of Internet identifiers in line with global policies.

If there was a domain name system and ICANN during WW2, would ICANN allow the domain names and websites of Hitler's Germany to operate, or would it take action against them?

Good that internet was invented latter
ICANN is & must be neutral in or for any scenario 😉

Would Japan be shut down by ICANN after Pearl Harbor, or would it remain neutral?

Russia is preparing a law on the confiscation of copyrights for electronic circuits and software of countries that have applied sanctions to it, and you are embarrassed to confiscate domain zones and domain names from it. In addition, Russia is likely to confiscate leased Boeing and Airbus passenger planes. The confiscation war began. In war, the one who thinks faster and shoots faster wins.

Doesn't really seem like all that effective of a "sanction". I guess they have limited financial options available, being they are such a small economy on the global stage.

Authorities are discussing the removal of liability for the use of unlicensed software.

Against the backdrop of growing sanctions, the Russian authorities are urgently preparing support measures, among which the abolition of criminal and administrative liability for the use of pirated software "from countries that supported the sanctions" is being discussed. Such a move could temporarily mitigate the departure of Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and others from Russia, experts admit. But, they warn, most of the significant software from these companies is sold by subscription, which means that access to it will be blocked anyway.

However, according to Moscow Digital School teacher Oleg Blinov, piracy resolution is not a very effective step: “Today, most of the useful software is made in the form of subscriptions to a cloud product, this allows developers to secure the code that remains on their servers. Without subscriptions and access to a regular service, many tools will stop working.”

I haven't noticed you treating me as an enemy then.

I don't think of you personally as an enemy.
Every Russian I have dealt with and every Ukrainian was a great guy

Nothing changes my view in this regard.

But in order to stop the attack on Ukraine
every sanction has to be effective right now.

That is the only way we know of,
that means no weaponized war

Sorry.
Really sorry for the Russian people,
who suffer from that
who do not support Putin's war.

Whoever that may be.

Russia is considering confiscating the assets of foreign companies leaving Russia. And you are embarrassed to confiscate domain zones and domain names. The confiscation war is in full swing.

In a confiscation war, Russia's small economy will be bankrupt far before the rest of the world is.

According to the British "Times", the Russian secret service FSB is looking at the invasion of Ukraine with the greatest concern. The newspaper refers to an FSB whistleblower who has critically summarized the situation in a document leaked by Russian opposition members. According to an FSB insider, the war was a "total failure" and Russia's current situation was comparable to the decline of Nazi Germany.

On his first day (Jan. 21, 2021) Biden canceled the Keystone XL pipeline project, an expansion of an existing conduit for tar-sands oil from Canada to the central United States. The pipeline had been a focus of activism for years, with Barack Obama first rejecting and Donald Trump later approving its construction.

The USA import 595,000 barrels of oil per day from Russia. The Keystone XL pipeline would have produced 830,000 barrels per day.

US House and Senate lawmakers have a deal on outline of bill to punish Russia

From CNN's Manu Raju

In a significant statement, four top lawmakers — the leaders of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee — said they would craft a bill that would suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus and provide the White House with authority to increase tariffs on the two countries.
In addition, the agreement — announced by the top Republican on House Ways and Means, Kevin Brady, and the Ways and Means Chair Richard Neal, along with the top Republican on Senate Finance, Mike Crapo, and Finance Chair Ron Wyden — would do the following, according to a statement released by their offices:

  • Provide US President Joe Biden with authority to further increase tariffs on products of Russia and Belarus
  • Require the US Trade Representative to use the voice and influence of the United States to seek suspension of Russia’s participation in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and halt Belarus’ WTO accession
  • Provide the President with authority to restore normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus subject to certain conditions and congressional disapproval
Also noting that the lawmakers say in their statement: "We have agreed on a legislative path forward to ban the import of energy products from Russia and to suspend normal trade relations with both Russia and Belarus."

US is a net exporter of oil.
Irrelevant.

The USA is importing oil from Russia and paying to Russia. Instead of Canada.

Different source:
In 2021, the US imported an average of 209,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and 500,000 bpd of other petroleum products from Russia, according to the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) trade association.

I don't mind paying more for gas.

Enjoy the collapse of the Ruble, all your assets, and the world wanting nothing to do with your country.
Russia's small economy will go bankrupt before the rest of the world does.

Enjoy the lack of freedoms and censorship.

Enjoy the shame it brings for generations to come.
