Maybe some of the people who have written .org off as an extension not to go after will stop, look at this sale, and wonder what the heck they've been missing. Or maybe they won't and I'll continue to make a nice living selling .org domains.

Awesome sale and congrats to National A1 and Sedo for making it happen.

Your right my friend? There going to be more .org sale to come.

Is it just me or this sale not really getting that much press inside the domain industry?

Only a couple comments here... only a couple blog posts about it etc.

Because it was a .org sale?

Since it was a .org sale, the news should be all that much greater!

No kidding. Maybe people don't realize that if this was a .com that obliterated the highest .com sale up to this point (Insure.com for $16 mil?) by this %, the sales price would be over $80 million (if Sex.com at $12 mil is still the largest, then it'd be over $60 million...still insane). This is absolutely HUGE. Oh yea, and AFAIK I don't think .net has a 7-figure sale does it? I've been saying for a long time that .org is effectively #2 in value behind .com without most people realizing it.

.net being second is overwhelmingly true for Asian countries but otherwise it doesn't seem to be true for much of the rest of the world. And I'm referring to the order of gTLDs...obviously ccTLDs in some countries like Germany are even ahead of .com.

I agree Steve.

With SE's ranking many .org's GREAT they are often undervalued.

I tried to leave a comment on TheDomains.com but it didn't post for some reason.. anyway

The company that purchased Poker.org, also owns several other keyword domains. One of them being Blackjack.org .

And with that .org, they outrank Blackjack.com on Google!

I would expect they have plans in place to do the same for Poker.org, since the highest .org is FreePoker.org but it is some 4 pages deep.

There Craps.net ranks on P2 for craps and a P1 3rd spot for Rackback.org on search term rakeback.

So they rank the best with .org's

Yea, that's probably exactly what they were figuring - looked at their Blackjack.org ranking, thought "gee, what would a #1 ranking on Poker be worth?" and in that light $1 million would be a bargain. BUT - ranking for poker is probably one of the most heated SEO battles online. It was 3 years ago that I had a discussion with someone who knew a number of poker sites and the lengths they would go to to do well in search engines, and he basically said they pay TEAMS of SEO people a healthy 7-figure salary in total. Figure that besides TV commercials, search is the gateway to many of those sites, and the top ones have turned their companies into multi-billion dollar companies, so how much IS that top ranking worth? Apparently enough to fork out a mil on a domain that will give them an edge over the competition. :)

It's really like buying A-Rod...if you're the Texas Rangers i.e. you and your chances of winning suck besides having A-Rod, it'll probably be the worst waste of money you could possibly do. If you're the New York Yankees (whom I hate *cough*), it's the best expense you could possibly have.

I am not sure why this sale is so surprising to some people. Poker is a top 10 keyword and .ORG is a top extension.

Good .ORG domains sell, but at the same time it can be tricky as not everything makes sense in .ORG

I sold a .ORG this week for $7,500. I can't release the name under NDA, but it was a 19 letter with 90K exact Google monthly search volume.

I think .org is taken as an alternative extension to .com nowadays. The view that only certain words fit .org seems a bit out-dated to me.

While I like .org and agree it's undervalued I don't think we will see a lot of sales like this one. Granted, poker is a top keyword but 1M does not sound like a bargain price to me because of the non-profit ring of .org. When I hear .org, I think Red Cross, Amnesty, WHO, UN etc. It's not the best keyword-TLD fit IMO but congrats to both parties :)

Agree. I think it's just an isolated case.

I 'bet' they could have bought poker.PRO for less. :)

I agree with sdsinc, Poker is a top keyword but it doesn't fit .org. This is presumably an SEO satellite site play because Poker.org wouldn't justify a $1m price tag on type in traffic and it's an awkward combination of a commercial keyword and not-for-profit extension.

If you look at PartyGaming's 2008 account, they have $472m of net revenue and $179m of that gets spent on distribution costs, presumably advertising makes up the bulk of that so $1m for something that might get them on the first page of Google is a fair gamble.

Another angle with gaming keywords and .org combinations is legitimacy, .org conveys legitimacy and that's something all gaming sites strive for. Also, with the .org you could perhaps found an alternative poker federation of players with leagues and rankings and drive people to your poker site.

I think the rigidity of extension perception - eg ORG not being seen as commercial - Or, ORG 'not fitting' the keyword - is outdated thinking now.

SEO & Promotion (+content) are what matters in creating use-perception, for any extension, now.

That is such a 90s mindset. It doesn't apply anymore.
