I wanted to see everyone's thoughts on Poker(dot)in now just over a year after the extension being made internationally available, with a years worth of sales to look at, etc. I've had much interest in the name, plenty of $10k-$20k offers ($20k being the highest offer I ever got). I had one casino/poker site that was interested in the name, but they weren't willing to give me a price, and so my sky-high asking price in response turned them off. At the time I was negotiating with them I had 3 open negotiations with Sedo, but I've since closed them all since they say dormant to my asking price (which I won't say because I want to see fresh numbers in the responses). The one site I thought for sure would be interested considering their 1,000+ personnel office in India, PartyPoker, did not respond to me. :p

Nonetheless, what should I be expecting for this name? Would current US legislation have much effect on its price? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated and rep given, maybe NP$ too for something in detail from the .in/.co.in experts here. Thanks!

Hey Crooky! I am not ".IN Expert", but I know that this extention have Much Perspectives. Indian's population is ~ 1 billion. I think this domain can cost no less then high $xx.xxx

I am not sure if playing poker in India has current legal status (despite providing back office for overseas operations) This will affect its value. An alternative strategy might be to generate income from redirected traffic or to rent the name (redirected nameservers).

another thing that might detract from the value is that indians are mostly muslims, but correct me if i am wrong, is it against there religion to gamble? Just a thought! lol

Not true. The biggest religion in India (high majority) is Hinduism. Following that would be Muslim.

yes indeed.
Religion: 80% Hindu, 14% Muslim, 2.4% Christian, 2% Sikh, 0.7% Buddhist, 0.5% Jains, 0.4% other

also further info on gambling in India:

You asked for the Indian government's legal stance on Internet
gambling. This question was a rather tricky one to research, due to
the confusion between Native American and Indian gambling.
Nonetheless, I have found a few resources that I believe answers your
question satisfactorily.

According to an article on the Rediff Guide to The Net
(http://www.rediff.com/search/2001/aug/08gamble.htm), an Indian
publication, the short answer to your question would be that Internet
gambling is considered illegal in India. There are, however, no
specific laws prohibiting internet gambling specifically, only
gambling in general.

According to Rediff: "...the legal faculty feels that provisions among
existing laws are enough to curb [internet gambling] in this country."
The existing laws in question are certain provisions in the Indian
Penal Code, but more importantly, the Public Gambling Act of 1867. You
may find more information on the Public Gambling Act on the Additional
links at the end of this answer.

There is also an article on Casinos being planned to be built in the
Delhi area of India that may be of interest to you. It is located at
the address below:
http://www.expresstravelandtourism.com/20010915/travelindia6.htm

According to that article, "the matter for setting up casino in state
would be put up to the state assembly for approval, for which the
state government would have to enact a legislation." So, exceptions
can be granted to the Acts and Provisions barring gambling in India
with the approval of the State Parliament.

So, to summarize, although there are no laws that bar internet
gambling specifically, the official government stance is that the
existing laws governing gambling offline is sufficient enough to curb
Internet gambling as well.

....so the value of the domain is still unclear as a straight immediate sale, but would estimate $xx,xxx not sure whether mid to upper range....

Thanks a lot Yoshi. I know there's at least 1 or 2 people here that have sold a number of .in/.co.in names...what say ye? Has anyone had a 1-word gambling-related .in/.co.in name sell for a lot? More thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

It will go as high as the .in extension will take it. If gambling is illegal in India, then that certainly limits the value, even though in my opinion poker.anyextension is a top 5 domain due to its PPC potential.

I think the $20K offers are a bit low for the potential, but I don't see this as a XXX,XXX name unless there is a cultural change in India.

Hi Crooky,

A little success with .co.in /.in names. :)

Gambling is illegal in India but expect that to change in the not too distant future, they do run casino ships out of Goa even now. Even Singapore, the straight laced of them all is opening casinos - too much potential revenue let go to neighbouring countries - like Malaysia - a few million Muslims there but it is the Chinese that gamble at Genting. My country, Thailand, first casinos on the way in a year or two. :$: :$:

Poker.in I remember when you bought it for a song, won't mention the price- $20k is low in my opinion but a very acceptable profit- don't get too attached. JMO

Good luck,

Wot

Gambling is legal in 1 state in India as far as I know, Goa. I'm sure there are groups that are continually trying to get it legalized in other states there as well. Still, most poker names are best suited for sites where you can play poker online, and I believe I've seen articles online where they say it's illegal but not really being enforced and some people are doing it. It's hard to find up-to-date data on it really, but from the articles I looked up a few months ago, that's how it seemed.

Poker

I think Poker is priceless no matter what the extension, or country. Who says Poker.in has to have something to do with India? Why can't it just be a gambling website about Poker? You know, developed like "Poker is in at Poker.in! Or,is poker legal in Indiana, USA? It could even be about poker players from Indonesia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Indonesian_poker_players

I would hang on to it, and not take less than what you want for it. If it was me, I would let this one sit for 5 years as an investment for retirement (me, not you!!). Then I would ask for the high $xx,xxx to low $xxx, xxx!!!!

Great name, good luck :sold:

Agreed to his idea; it could even stand for Poker International.

as for value, it would be hard to say. but i think mid xx,xxx is what the price is now.

Heh, Poker International was a thought I had too. If I had the money, time, and effort to set up a poker site, that's probably the angle I'd go for, as it's most grand. It would be nice to have PokerInternational.com too if I went that angle. Still, I'm definitely prepared to wait for a worthy offer. It's funny too, because before I realized what I had on my hands, I had actually once countered a bid on Sedo with $20,000 in Sept last year, and they closed negotiations. I look back on that and shiver now, lol. Thanks for the appraisals everyone!

I think if you are not in hurry, wait for other 3-4 yrs and come.

That time Indian market will be mature enough to give you right price. ( in XXX K)
Indian internet market is growing and you can see high growth Rate (50-60% in next couple of yrs.
If you have faith in me, I suggest wait

If in hurry, I think 20K is not a bad deal at all :)
