Alot of information which is great, but the design is very plain and lacks character colour. Also, seeing as it's a plant web site and all - why not make the design different shades of greens, yellows, etc instead of the black and white.

Yep, i agree. Tremendous content - obviously in exchange for design. A bit of "jungle" feeling would be great, show some "green thumb" rather than black and white, it would help by transporting what your site is about. Create a custom logo and tag line/slogan.
Thumbnails of each plant that you're talking about would be a great addition as well. Visuals always work better than text.

I don't like the glaring white square on a black background look.

But what I did find strange was that the url is http://plants.infoneed.info/ so the site is a plant site? but if you click a link Candy shops? you go to candy shops page, its as if no single page has the right or importance to be the index page. even the navigation gives no importance to the plant information page. SO I think you need a directory page so that your visitor know where he is and where to go when he gets confused.

If I entered this page I would leave almost straight away there is nothing to engage the curiosity and at first glance it looks like a non engish site.
