What programs does everyone use?

Do you use stuff like Dreamweaver and Frontpage or go with simpler methods like notepad, notpad++ ect?

also is this more a matter of preference on what to use can they all do the same things?

Eclipse (Ganymede) and vim

Vim is my favorite editor, Eclipse is a nice IDE but I am considering a switch to Zend Studio.

Even though i have used all the top-class IDE/Editors i still prefer the simplest

Other apps such as Dreamweaver CS3 and PHPdesigner are good but they are way too crowded.

Dashcode, don't use any of the features so I could just as easily use nano though.

Absolutely you can debug PHP... Eclipse + PDT + xdebug is an awesome combination.

It's not perfect, but you can add breakpoints, do step debugging, change variables 'on the fly' and all of that. Definitely helped me on occasion.
