Happens all the time. There's a loophole that allows registrars delete a name within 5 days of registration and not be charged for it. The provision was intended to allow accidental typo names to be deleted at no charge, but its being used by several registrars to register bulk domains and park for a few days to monitor traffic. They then keep the good ones and delete the rest.

if this is legal, then why not start a business to keep finding all the names with natural traffic?

Rj is right. I just noticed this on the www.Registerfly.com website. I never even knew it existed. I think they say you must let them know by the 4th day.

It happens all the time. Drop registrars are swallowing all that they can, test for traffic, then release low-traffic names. They only keep the good names and get a refund for the others.
If the name is a drop and it was caught, monitor it for a few days. It might ultimately be released

What might happen is that the name is deleted, then caught by another drop registrar, tested again and so on... I am monitoring a name that has been deleted twice already :yell:

What is to stop the registrar from keeping it (almost) indefinitely - by deleting just before the period and then re-registering a microsecond later ad infinitum...?

Do it on enough names on big enough a scale and even if no traffic, bound to be some sale inquiries..

Is there a limit to the number that each registrar can register a given name?

0.25 $ each register, so the cost will be high if they do for infinitum :)

Right. And big customers get discounts from their registrar... so it's just a few pennies per name (not 25 cents).

Looks like every .com/.net that drops is now being registered and tested. (And some re-tested again and again by others).

That brings up another question (sorry to add to thread), if you have a name for a while (few months) can you delete it from the registrar?

Yes, you can delete a name at any time. The five day grace period relates to getting a refund on a new registration.

If you own a domain for a few months and want to delete it, just contact your registrar and request that they delete the name from the registry. Some people find this useful when responding to trademark infringement letters. :)

The true cost of a domain name to the registrar is as follows:
For .com: $6 for the Registry (Verisign) + $0.25 ICANN tax.
For .net: $4 for the Registry (Verisign) + $0.25 ICANN tax.

Everything charged above that is the registrar margin.
