"Pay-Buy Mobile", the term coined by the mobile phone industry, allows mobile phones to be used, at the point of sale, instead of cash or plastic credit cards.

Backers now Include: Nokia, KPN, O2, Orange, SingTel, Vodafone Group, Samsung, LG, AT&T, China Mobile, NTT DoCoMo Inc, Telenor, TeliaSonera and MasterCard.

The wireless payment initiatives and standards are being agreed upon worldwide, with a trial launch slated for October 2008! This is HUGH NEWS :)

No more goldcard or mastercard but goldpay or masterpay on your mobile phone. Awesome!

Great find; thanks.

This is HUGE news, thanks for posting that texasgamer! however it does not mention that extension we need to hear!
Furthermore, I did some .mobi whois checks and found they are not really enforcing their .mobi presence!

Whilst this is good news, i dont think it will take-off as the mobile companys expect.

Swapping a credit card for a mobile phone would seem no more secure (if not less secure) then using your plastic, and if not more hassle for places that would be looking to accept payments via mobile.

I personally would not use it and a percentage of the older generation can barley switch on a computer, and ive seen people have trouble with the chip and pin, so i really dont think they could use payments via mobile.

There is also a security risk of loopholes and bugs in the system and hackers finding thier way inside.

This is my personal view, i wouldnt swap my mobile for my plastic, and its rare i will use my plastic in a shop anyway. That article does say:

efforts to market a “mobile wallet” that can be used at the point of sale have generally failed to move beyond the trial phase in the United States.

Which is not good news im afraid.

The only reason the big companys are backing it is because it could be a way for them to make more profit.

They will probably start offering incentives to use this as a means of payment as I don't see them turning down an additional revenue stream .. money for old rope :)
