I also noticed stats aren't posting yet for today...

vbigdeli - You can edit keywords, just not remove them, for some reason. I'm looking. Worse case scenario it will be fixed on Monday morning.

About the stats for 12/05 and 12/06, they won't be available until Monday. It seems Yahoo is having a reporting problem and it won't be fixed until Monday. We have account level numbers, just not domain level.

Because of this issue with the stats, our estimates for 12/07 (today) weren't being processed, but I'm looking at it now. They should be up within an hour.

Is it possible to actually fill your removed keywords?

I mean fill it to where you can't add anymore.

I don't think so. There seems to be no limit to how many keywords you can remove manually via the edit keywords function. But..if you end up exhausting the available related keywords from your 3 keyword categories, you could end up getting totally unrelated keywords showing up. Plus, you can remove your keywords from the main landing page, but you cannot prevent them from showing up on your results page.

ZeroHill - It's my personal recommendation to never remove any keywords. That's just me. I would only ever remove possible TM issues.

As a long time PPC guy, I am a little confused as to why I wouldn't want to remove keywords that are not relevant to what my visitors are looking for. Especially in situations where the automated system does a poor job of matching categories to your keywords. I always thought an outstanding RPC with a 0% CTR still translates into revenue of zero. Am I missing something here?

I'm a long time PPC guy (well, gal) too, and when I first started, I thought I knew better and did a lot of keyword removal. But it's a moving target you can never quite catch up on - as soon as you remove all the ones you think weren't relevant, you get a bunch more - and they aren't necessarily static, they change over time - I assume depending on what's available from the ad feeds. Overall, when I gave up playing with keywords, I ended up making more money (and having more time available for other things).

What you think people are looking for might not be what they're really looking for. This isn't necessarily the same kind of traffic as you get driving PPC ads.

But of course, tests tests and more tests will tell you what works best for you.

What's the best way to explain this... Let's say you have a domain cameras.com, and we say that one of the words we say should be on there is "booger". If you go ahead and remove the keyword, you have just potentially shut down the camera market of a certain country, because you may think you know best. On the other hand our system learns by what people search for and click on. So let's say nobody clicks or searches on "booger" that is on a domain, then within 5 days the keyword will be removed and you never had to do a thing. No extra work besides adding the domain.

In most cases what we have found is that if you remove 1 keyword, you will normally remove more than 100 per domain. WHY? What we have found is that most people who remove keywords are also the ones who think they know what the "best" keyword is to use on a domain. We have one customer who have a very good generic domain and he changes the keyword at least every other day. Why not just leave it what the domain is. Isn't that why the people are going to your domain to begin with? If you own cameras.com and the system says it wants to use "camera", don't change it to "canon powershot a80 digital camera" because it pays more.

As I mentioned before I would always recommend removing keywords that could possibly cause a TM problem. If you have jet.com, you would probably want to make sure not include anything about magazines or football, that makes sense.

In the next week or so we will be adding a new scoring system to the edit page which will tell you how good we think a keyword is, hopefully it should help. In most cases if you remove more than 1 keyword per domain, you really are only harming yourself.

You can take my advice as just that, it's not like I have any idea how the system works. :)

The booger camera was a website that was around a few years ago and you could upload pics of your under 1 year old. Not sure what happened to it though. :)

Obviously if you have a domain, and every keyword is crap, then maybe we split the domain wrong or possiblly we just don't have the keyword in our system. For example we had somebody recently who had hundreds of city+newspaper domains, but we only had city+newspapers, so he either got the "city" or "newspaper", which did cause quite a problem for him.

Donny, thanks for the info. I was unaware that the system would continue to optimize individual domains on an ongoing basis based on which items received clicks. So even on domains that have had a few hundred unique visitors with little or no clicks over the course of a month or two, you would recommend leaving alone? That's great if the system really works that way. It's just painful to watch traffic that could be driving revenue not producing anything. Guess it just takes some getting used to after having worked the other side of it for so long. On the advertising side, if something isn't working; it gets clipped immediately. Guess I'll have to change my way of thinking.
