Dropped domains and 404s

Donny,

I'm guessing anyone with dropped domains (like myself) could be showing big 404 numbers (ie my dropped domains had numerous links with things like domain.com/visit or domain.com/mystore etc.).

My account is showing about 100 visits per day but 2000 404s. I'd like to be converting that better but thats another issue. First I want to make sure I'm clear on the numbers.

Thanks for the new data.

thebutler - You are correct, expired/dropped domains have more 404 traffic than anything. We do convert 404 traffic very well, if it's a real person. The problem you run into is that some of it is broken images, which nobody will actually see a page on that, sometimes it's javascript, and sometimes it's just some bot following links. So if you remove all of the bad stuff you left with about 28% that is good. That number is based on yesterday's stats.

@netmeg.....ok....just didnt think 404's would appear on parked pages....since there is no other pages than the url itself...

Look at one of your domains in google that is indexed and check the results.

You'll see ones like - supercool.ca/click.php?c%3E%27dmjdlgsbve%3E2%27lfzxpset%3E%27sbo

That's for the ones google has dropped by and decided to index, then there are those domains with expired traffic - they'll produce plenty of 404's.

Donny --

Thanks for your reply to my earlier post about the captcha screens. The problem seems to be taken care of.

As far as these new stats on searches and 404s, do you plan to add these on the domain level?

And, what's the best way to use this new info?

Thanks.

These stats go back to last year. :)

My Searches stats are about 33% higher than my Visitors stats. I have 99% generics in my portfolio. I don't buy expired traffic.

Anybody else want to share what their Search stats look like compared to Visitors? I think it would be interesting to compare.

It seems you can almost set your watch to the ratio of Search to Visitors - its that predictable it seems, at least for me.

@Roy.....thanks man!

We have 404's and searches back to mid/early 2007. We do plan on adding both to the domain level. Unforatuntely it will require a little more work than I expected. But the changes will actually speed up the report generation process.

Hmm, I tested the 404 thing, and I see that visit in today's stats, listed as 0 visits and 0 clicks. And I have another one like that that wasn't me, on another domain - so can I assume that something that shows up as an 0 visit is a 404?

You are correct. That is the way it's always been since day one.

This 404 thing - if the name at ns1.parked.com etc. - does it not default to the main domain automatically?

Like does say exampledomain.com/this-is-a-test.html not resolve to exampledomain.com automatically...

...I just tested one of my names and it does resolve to the main url. Phew.

But what is the main reason for showing this data. Is there something we need to do?

This is one of the reasons I didn't want to show the information. You have those people preaching about transparency and nobody even knows what they have. :)

Let me explain.

When somebody goes to http://www.computer.com/ we show the normal landing page and we register that as a visitor.

When somebody goes to http://www.computer.com/lkajsdlkjasldkjasldkj, we show the normal landing page, but that is registered as a 404, and not a visitor. If that person does anything, then they are registered as a 404 and a visitor.

404s are good to let you know which domains are getting a lot of error traffic and you can potentially optimize that traffic for the domain better.

It will make more sense once we have the domain level searches and 404s available in a few days.

Thanks for explaining that.
And thanks for the transparency, even if it will take a while for us to understand. :tu:

Wow, my 404 is twice the number of visitors. Does this mean that my CTR is overstated by 3 times?

Yes, I'm glad to have the information too. I don't have any domains that were previously owned, so I wouldn't expect a lot of 404's, but I'll check it out anyway. Hopefully at some point the people who created the Widget will adjust it so that it works with the new stats.

netmeg - I haven't seen the widget from Domainer's Edge and I don't see anything on their website either. So I can't help much.
