This artist is selling 1000 simple paintings of a blue number on white canvas. 568 of the 1000 have been sold already within two months and I'm pretty sure at this point that he is going to complete his goal. He stands to make around a quarter million dollars from this project.

Would you buy one?

Thats a lot of money for the little effort he/she probably put into the paintings. I don't think I would buy one. Not worth $500 for a blue number painted on some 12x12 canvas. Is this some famous artist or something?

Generally, the value of a number is defined by the number itself, in the following way: value = 1000 - number.
Does that mean #1000 was free? :)

I would, yes, but not at that price! :p

Oh and it would have to be the "right" number.

Now why can't I come up with an idea like that??

Probably because you're too busy trying to come up with a legit, long term way to earn money.

forgive me for being an idiot - (it's in the genes)
Umm, is he selling blue painted numbers on white canvas,
or are there actual paintings?

:P as it always seems :(

Reminds me of 500words.com

I will think of something like this one day...

Hey, good for the artist. But it feels like 1,000 "here's your sign" signs. If I owned one, I'd be embarassed to admit how much I paid for it ($577.80! D-: ). Might as well make my own, and brag about how I save $567.80.

Now that's the right question. If it were someone famous that painted the numbers by hand (even an actor or actress with no real artistic talent otherwise), then the $500+ might actually be worth it as a conversation peice, specially if the funds were slated to go to charity.

I find it funny how he lists the current price and then the "Value" at which he makes almost double when really there is no value other than what a used white canvas goes for and some blue paint.

I had to laugh when I read the first paragraph...that's genius...Paint your own and brag about how much money you saved....LOL....that's a great idea. We could start it here...first 1000 people randomly get a number 1-1000. They paint there number...post the picture...brag about the savings-value blah blah and sell them to charity....

hmmmm

Well, if you can take something like this and make it work for money, the more power to you!

That's a creative idea. How does he get that value? You can't just make it up.

I think it is a ridiculous idea. So the numbers were painted on...ooooo. Let's get a stencil, some blue paint, and hand it over to a 10 year old. We could duplicate the project and then charge $1000 a piece...cuz the kid did it! ;)

I may consider paying fifty cents for one of those drawings but no more. This is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever seen, but I guess I have to give credit to the person who came up with the idea, because they have made a ton of money...

At the time of this post 205 Domainers have seen this thread.
Of the 205, 175 are now furiously working on a variation of this theme.
25 are still at the Art Supply store trying to decide purple or green
so as not to look like they ripped the idea.
Armstrong, Badger and -RJ- have moved on, back to real domaining.
And B33R and I are still trying to figure out whats up with the "pee in the bottle thread".

Man I love this place.
