A first year student at Nottingham University hopes to avoid graduating with debt by selling a million US dollars of internet advertising space.

Alex Tew, 21, of Cricklade, Wiltshire, who is studying business management, has launched milliondollarhomepage.com.

Companies can choose from the one million pixels on the site and buy their own for one dollar (54p) each.

"A few weeks ago I looked at my account and I was heavily overdrawn before I had even got to university," he said.

One of Alex's three older brothers left university owing £30,000, prompting him to make a firm decision not to slide any further into the red.

"I was up late with my note-pad when it came to me," said Alex.

On the site is a grid of 10,000 boxes, each 100 pixels (10 by 10) in size.

Customers can place advertising logos on the purchased space, linking web users to their own websites.

If his site succeeds, he will leave university with $1m (£543,615).

Yeah tis true. There are going to be many ideas also not copying his exact site and they will then repeat what it has already done. I have a brilliant idea that I will post here as soon as it's up and running.

I personally think these things will be around for a while. I guess I'm kind of hoping they will too, since I've put a lot of effort into making a topsite for them.

I wouldn't credit all his success to the idea alone. I'd say that it was the press that really helped him - more publicity, more traffic, more demand for ad space.

i agree, a friend of mine bought an ad on the sit and at first was getting tons of hits from the site, but it is now starting to slow down.

$50 is pretty cheap! Not sure why/how this would fly with many companies. Seems the news probably made it the sucess it is, no one else.

No doubt, it was the mass-media successful factor. If you think out something crazy enough (as Alex Tew stated) you have a good chance to attract BRITISH mass-media and the world mass-media as the result. Honest story, not hidden personality, info open. And actually - an internet reality show.

I think once the site sells out every ad space it will become even more famous - it will be like he says - internet history - the main problem I see, is that half of the ads on their are scam-like sites - only a couple of big names, like 2checkout, and of course, Namepros.com =)
