Hi NP.

This is my take on .de domains as a German.

I like the .de's but I do not want to trade them because I feel that the market is not as transparent for these as for .com and all the others. It is somehow not logical for how much or less some .de's get sold for.

I only reg them for my own use and not for resale.

What do the others think?

Cheers,

How about German.com? is it much worse than German.de?

those names are not too bad. Also even though Video-World.de has dash in it, it is a PR5 site.

Well, you cant predict what the end buyer has in mind, no one is stupid enough to spend so much on a name without seeing any potential

.DE expiry dates?

Does anyone know where I can find the expiry dates for .DE (German) domain names? I can't even find this information on the denic.de (registry) site after using their own whois look-up tool...

Many thanks!
A.

How the ^%## do you set up .DE nameservers?

OK, I hope there's someone tech savy here who can help me with this :(

Anyways... I bought a .DE domain which I want to point to the hosting that I bought.
I thought I could just set up the nameservers to my host... ns7.bigbytes.net and ns8.bigbytes.net

BUT... when I tried that ( my registrar is GoDaddy, by the way ) I kept getting an error email from Godaddy saying the following:

The modifications you requested for the domain BESTSPORTSBETTING.DE
have FAILED.

Error: RegCCTLDSvc: VerifyHostsForRegistration request failure -
Unknown NIC Response
CheckDNS Error - Non-authoritative answer Domain =
BESTSPORTSBETTING.DE, NameServer = NS8.BIGBYTES.NET
Hosts are NOT on different networks
CheckDNS Error - Non-authoritative answer Domain =

I emailed Godaddy support, and they said I need to find out from BigBytes what their German ns values are.
So I email BigBytes... and the guy doesn't know WTF is going on , because he basically told me " You need to change your NS values to " and then he just told me the default BigBytes NS values that I have already tried.... and they didn't work.

I also searched on Google for the answer but found little.. except I found this post on a board where the guy said

Thanks for your answer, Ralph, but it was actually a little bit more difficult than that since I didn't know exactly how Germany deals with DNS issues. :-/

Anyway, first of all, yes, the two different NS or DNS settings are not only correct, but apparently required. At least that's what I found out from DENIC, the German Registry. According to them, the two different NS or DNS names are required - names that are not only different due to the ns1 and ns2 setting, but also different in name altogether - such as ns1.whateverA.com and ns2.whateverB.com

In addition, I didn't know that there are no Registrars per say, such as GoDaddy. The companies who offer server and domain sales, leasing, colocation, etc. are generally the ones who also sell domain names exclusively. Each company can have their own separate method of implementating NS and DNS services, and that's where the root of my problem was. The company where I'm leasing our server had to set up an online "DNS Package Account" in order for me to set up all of the proper values - just like with GoDaddy. :o

Once I was informed by them that a separate NS1 and NS2 process had been initiated for my domains, I then reentered those very same values at GoDaddy (24 hours after setting everything up properly on the server), and voila, the next day everything worked. ;D

I guess it was just a mild lack of getting all of the ducks lined up properly in a row? ::)
Today I'll be setting up a few more .DE domains.

OK but I still don't know WTF to do :(

You cannot have 2 name server IP addresses using the same block range. For .de regulations, your IP address for ns1 and ns2 must be on different subnets.

They are pretty strict about this. Godaddy will just choke and send you repeated emails regarding failed attempts.

Thanks for the reply.
So, is it possible for me to set this up?
Do I just go into the Godaddy control panel, and enter in nameservers with different subnet values?
I'm not sure to where to get these values from.
Ill try telling Godaddy what you told me.

Are you hosting with godaddy?

If you are, contact their support.

If you are not, contact your hosting company and tell them you will need 2 seperate IP addresses to your nameservers to support .de domain names. My gut feeling tells me you do not have a dedicated server, but you never know :)

anyone with experience with .de domains

ok ive got a .de domain and the restrictions on the dns are annoying

has anyone had experience of this and can help me find somehow to redirect the traffic from the name

ideally i would like a redirect service or a small hosting to do an html redirect but either of these will have to conform to the restrictions

any help on this would be amazing

Join DNOA i would say and use the privacy info they offer :)

However, maybe you should first check to see if it is permitted by the registry.
.US for example prohibits the use of privacy protection.

Why are other people permitted to see my data, for example my address, in the whois query?

This data has been rendered public in the whois query for some very good reasons.

Firstly, it is important to be able to contact you if ever there are any technical difficulties caused by your domain or its use, which might lead to problems for others. Of course, it would normally be your provider who would sort out such technical problems for you, but that does not affect publication of your data. It may happen that your provider is partly to blame for the technical difficulties and, ultimately, you, the domain holder, will be held liable (and that includes liability for any legal consequences).

Secondly, your data must be made public, so that, if your domain is the source of an infringement of somebody else's rights, it will be possible to establish against whom to proceed, if need be.

There is another angle you should consider. In registering a domain and using it, for instance as the address for a website, you as a rule become the provider of a media service which prescinds your usual privacy considerations. There are special laws that apply here and they require all providers of such services to provide a masthead disclosing their name and address. So, since everyone can see who you are here anyway, there would be no point in DENIC keeping your data confidential.

Against this background, incidentally, the German data-protection authorities have expressly approved of the publication of personal data in the whois query. Further information on this subject is to be found, for example, in the thirteenth data-protection report by the government of the German federal state of Hesse (sections 9.2 and 9.3) and also in its fifteenth data-protection report (section 8.7).

If you do not want to have your address made public, the only option you have is to get the domain registered by someone else whom you trust. This other person will then be the legal domain holder instead of you, and their address will, of course, be made public in the whois query.

I doubt privacy is allowed for .de.
You could still register using the name of a proxy but they would be the legal owner for the domain as well, which is not desirable at all.

Looking for info on .de domains

I am looking for any info on .de domains. Like, when and how they expire, are there any drop-catchers, are there zone dumps available, etc.

The only dropcatcher that I know for .de is desnap.de

Thanks for the info. I see that they list expiring domains, but do they actually backorder them?

Inod, thanks for the quick reply. :)

But as I see many .de domains sales arent listed above. In 2006, there were lots of domains sold , your list shows most of the 2005 sales. :)

I would like to get all the sales right from the .de inception.

There is no way to do that because his site is HTML. If you want that you just need to search for .de and copy and paste like I did.

.DE Names / rules..

Hello..
A few questions regarding the rules about registering a .De domain name..

I'm reading different rules regarding the need to have an address in Germany when registering a .De domain name, some sources state that you need to have at least one contact field with an address in Germany, where other sources state this rule has now been dropped and it's open to anyone (maybe why I have been able to successfully register a name).

And, what's the rule with parking a .DE domain..? I have attempted to set the name servers to parked.com for the short term and it keeps getting rejected.!

Any advice would be much appreciated..
Thanks
Egg

address in Germany when registering a .De domain name,

This is correct.

You need to have a German address to register for a domain [.de]. Incase you dont have an address, you can get a German lawyer which the registrar will have, to act as the address for it. You will have to pay for this service.

Easiest way is to provide a friend's address in Germany, which will solve all hassles.

Just curious, which registrar are you using for registration? :)
