I received an email today for the domain Number30.com. In it, the writer stated that he represents a third party involved in professional sports, and would like to discuss purchasing the name. Upon a little research, I found that NFL player Ahman Green went so far as to make a down payment on a house in order to get his number 30 from another teammate when he went to the Houston Texans. So my first guess is it is him. Here is the link

So, if it happens to be him looking for this name, or even if it is some other athlete, what kind of price range should I shoot for? Where to start at? I have little experience in working out possible big sales of domains... so any help is appreciated.

I would put the ball back in their court and request that they make you an offer. At this point you have no idea what they are prepared to pay for it and you don't want to sell yourself short. I know a domainer that recently got an offer on a domain of $3000, he replied with $25000 thinking they would negotiate. They immediately came back and agreed to the $25000!! You never know.
I'm not saying that this is worth $25000 or that you will get anywhere near that. This is just an example of where an enduser knew what they wanted and was prepared to pay for it.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking along the same lines. Especially with athletes, not to mention the ones with huge egos, I guess what they consider a "small price" could be a huge payday for us peons. I'm super excited on this one though, I caught this domain on the drop hoping for this exact kind of offer. Maybe I should negotiate for some signed merchandise as well. :hehe:

Just wondering how getting a domain like that isn't the same as cybersquatting?

Because it is simply too generic. Getting a domain like this is like getting any other generic domain. You see it as a valuable asset, and purchase it knowing that it is an investment. I personally compare buying domains like this the same as investing in undeveloped land or real estate. I have had it parked with numerology ads on it, not sports jerseys or anything. Plus, there are no TM violations on it. It just so happens an athlete with the number 30 wants it. :)

Gotcha, that makes sense. What about the domain ag30(.)com in this instance? Would that be considered cybersquatting?

Perhaps. Especially if it had related ads on it. Or if you approached him personally for the sale. Although, it could be taken as just a random 4 character .com name. I think the key thing to point out though is would he really go after someone for the name? Doubtful. Like you said before, he can afford it :yell:

Ok, so I just rec'vd an email with the initial offer. I have been offered $ 4k for this name. What should I counter at if his initial offer is $4,000... 6k? 8k? 10k!? Any input appreciated!

Well that's nice first offer I would counter with around $10k-$12k.

I would counter at $20000 - gives you more room for negotiation. Should they start to move up in increments you have more room to move down in similar increments. Sounds like they are serious about purchasing this and $4000 to them may be lowball!

This page will be indexed and the other party could easily find it.So in future situations I would recommend being a little more discrete untill the deal is through.GL to you on a wonderful deal.
