NPer of the month

back in the day there was a Member Of The Month page on NP

people nominated people and voting occurred

a similar idea might be interesting ...

add a vote button under the avatar to cast 1 vote (without nominations)

the member with most votes each calender month becomes MOTM or NPer of the month

there could be a page with most votes (of the current month) ... as well as previous winners

there could be a badge ... or rep bonus (eg. 100 rep points)

also , total votes of the year = MOTY

having 2 or 3 votes per month (per member) can ease voting and make a more lively contest

there should be rules for ties etc

Remembering some of the notes from previous discussions on this topic we found that the system was gamed by members signing up with multiple accounts using dynamic routers to vote for them self and their friends to win. It's hard to keep an honest and fair playing field in a voting environment (Especially when there's a Prize involved). It's something to keep in mind though and maybe look into alternate methods of tracking / moderating / etc. that wont be to time intensive on our volunteer staff to keep the playing field a fair one.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Eric Lyon

how about if only a mature NPer could vote ... 100 posts and 6+ months

or something similar

the prize could be nominal so as to not attract scammers (mostly prestige)

On that token, the fairest might be to only allow VIP members to vote since they are the most recognized as veterans. To keep that fair, VIP's wouldn't be allowed to vote for another VIP since they already have a status for being elite, have a private forum, a private marketplace, and allotted 1 extra marketplace thread. It would basically be VIP's voting on who they think the next upcoming elite veteran and contributor will or should be.

Perspective: Out of 201,035 registered members, Only 715 are part of the elite VIP group ;)

interesting ...

another idea might be ... normal members (100+posts) to have 1 vote per month ... while VIPs would have 2 votes per month (or 1 double vote)

also a vote from a VIP to VIP could count for 1 vote (I think VIPs should be able to vote VIPs)

or there could be 2 different contests ... one for MOTM and one NewVIP or something

Tracking who's already voted and how many times might be taxing unless it was scripted to perform automatically. So that brings us to script creation in order to monitor / track accurately. We would need a coder proficient in VB hooks / plugin creation from scratch to make it possible to track so many votes from that huge of a member base.

I can do basic repairs, snippets, and general tech support trouble shooting, but I'm not proficient enough to code on the fly from scratch to create new hooks / plugins.

The old MOTM plugin is so outdated and obsolete it's not even funny. It's so full of bugs that it had to be discontinued long ago.

I've realized they're not going to do any community building type stuff here - http://www.namepros.com/namepros-info-and-suggestions/783221-namepros-best-of-2012-a.html

They'll come up with all kinds of reasons why they can't. It's really simple stuff but it's made out like it's this big undertaking. So it ain't happening.

Since its so simple, you are more than welcome to code the hook / plugin for us. Let me know when its complete so you can send it over and we can test it.

Thanks,

We both know you don't need that for this to happen. Somehow other forums manage to do stuff like this.

I've realized that's just the way it is here and that's fine. You read this thread, or the thread I linked too and it's pretty obvious. Anytime suggestions like this pop up, it's one reason after another why it can't be done. I think the thinking is, the forum is just going along just fine, we don't need to put in any extra effort.

Please double check the posts in this thread as I made a suggestion for VIP's to be the voters which is actually logical considering it would be easier to track / mod / manage 715 voters vs. a larger mass bearing closer to the 201,000k+ members we have.

Keep in mind that every vote (without a script to track it) will have to be manually checked to be sure the member accounts are in order, nobodys voted more than allowed, each has the right amount of posts, etc. Not to mention the influx of members that will still try to qualify to vote by posting countless "Thanks, Good Post, Cool, I like you, Nice read, Etc." type post count inflation spam that will saturate the forums.. Having to manually check that every day for a majority of the userbase just isn't logical. A script is the most logical answer. You may not agree with me on that, but after several years of monitoring, managing, tracking, and number crunching voter based contests it's become clear that humans need the assistance of technology for accuracy (Especially with a large userbase and a history of member manipulation in past contests).

We can agree to disagree on this one, But I still think only allowing VIP's to vote would be the most proficient solution to running a Manual voting contest for MOTM to keep things accurate and fair for everyone.

there are many options available ...

let's also see what other NPers might suggest

how about if it was a group that had specific privileges ... eg. access to a certain page or thread

only members with 100+ posts can see and vote

VIPs might get 2 votes or 1 double vote per month

or normal members (100+ posts) get 3 votes per month (1 each 10 days)
and VIPs get 3 double votes per month (1 double vote every 10 days)
however , before adjusting so much "weight" to VIPs opinions maybe we should consider it some more
shouid experience and seniority count ? or should we strive for per member equality/fairness (which might not be easy to manage , with many more than 700 people)

I just want my MOTM Badges back, and everyone else that already earned theirs.

Peace,

The system is defunked as we mentioned to you months ago in a previous thread. The badges were part of that system that is no longer functioning properly, full of bugs, and discontinued.

Thanks again for understanding,

Eric Lyon

Because I lurk more than I contribute (quest for knowledge)..

Just my two cents...how about VIP members that have made the most postings per month (for instance "helpful/information" threads) voted by other VIP?

Sometimes you need to compromise in a situation like this. I can definitely see where having MOTM again would clearly help boost member activity and quality posting if done correctly. Eric made a pretty fair proposal if you ask me. You requested a MOTM program to be enabled again, now it is up to the management of this forum to decide how it is run. You cannot have your cake and eat it to. Hence, you can't suggest MOTM be brought back and also decide how it is run.

As a forum owner myself, I know how much of a pain in the but it can be at times to implement new features that members want. Community members are always requesting new features and keeping on top of every single one of them can sometimes be a pain. Especially when vBulletin updates come out and changes later need to be made to those plugins so that they work with newer versions of vBulletin. Plugins that are not maintained and updated along with the forum software often end up breaking or require recoding in some instances to make it compatible again.

Also with you mentioning weighing different members with different amounts of voting privileges calls for an even more extensive and complex system than what is truly needed. The management right now is in the process of already bringing us new tools to use when domaining and they are also taking their time to manage this community. So any time they set aside to bring a MOTM program back would be greatly appreciated by many of the members here I am sure so lets let the staff decide how it is implemented. We suggest the feature, the staff decides how they can make it possible. Simple as that. :)
