I used a google adwords keyword search link that i found in this forum to search the terms latex, joy for a name that i own (latexjoy.com). Turns out that latex had 5000000 local searches for august and joy had 4090000. However I have been told that my name is worthless several times and I dont get any traffic to the parked page. My questions are:

1) am I using the google keyword tool properly?
2) am I interpreting the results correctly?
3) And if i am not (as i feel i am not) what is the correct way to use it and interpret the results.

Thanks in advance

Using the adwords tool is definitely a step in the right direction in researching domains! However, instead of looking at the results for individual words in your domain, you need to look at the search volume for the exact phrase, i.e. in this case, the search volume for [latex joy], not 'latex' and 'joy' individually. You need to enter the phrase on a single line in the box and then make sure that under 'Match Type' you select 'Exact'.

The result you should look at is the 'Global Monthly Search Volume' which gives you the average number of searches per month for the exact phrase in your domain name. People have different criteria for deciding what is a good result, but for a .com I normally take notice of anything over 1000 (but often much higher, and usually xx,xxx+ for other tlds). You should also look at the 'Advertiser Competition' column - this tells you how many advertisers are bidding to place adverts on the search results for your phrase. Also useful is the average CPC (cost per click - you may need to select the CPC option in the drop-down 'Choose columns to display') i.e. how much it costs an advertiser when someone clicks on their ad - again, the higher the figure, the better - in other words, the payout to the domain/site owner for Adsense clicks is potentially higher.

It's often best to look at these 3 figures in combination - sometimes a phrase might have a relatively lower search volume but high advertiser competition and a high CPC, which could make it worthwhile registering/developing.

Hope this helps and good luck with your research! :tu:
