Hello! I'm not a domain sales professional, but I did work at ISPs back in the '90s so may have been the CSR who registered yours if you've been in the business for a long time. :)

I did however register some domains for myself -- I bought velvet.net in 1996 and for about 10 years used it as a personal site, non-profit server, and it did have its brief time being well-known in certain circles as did some of the accounts on it. I've not been doing much with it for the past few years. Sentimentally it means a lot to me, but I've done a fair bit of research on selling it -- including posting to your extremely helpful appraisal forum -- and I'm willing to put in the work required for the big bucks it could fetch.

How do I do that, though, not being in the domain business? I've read all the documentation I could get my hands on here on NamePros and via a number of Google searches, but most of them seem to be for people like you guys -- who want to invest in domains as a hobby or business opportunity.

So, some questions:

How do I find the right end users? As mentioned in my appraisal thread, how do I "search the end user"?

What is a string keyword? Is it worth going with a domain auction house (Sedo etc) and which ones are any good? Is it worth getting a "certified" or "professional" appraisal type thing from the likes of Godaddy et al? Where would it be wise to park / host a domain like this; what is the best parking site for payout? What does one normally put on a parked page? Is it appropriate to contact companies directly that might have an interest such as ones with velvet in their name?

Is there a better place for me to post some of these questions? :)

Thanks very much!

Wow that's a lot of questions! First of all I would say park it for free at sedo. Sedo will automatically put advertisements for certain businesses on you parked domain. These could be potential end users for your domain. I would never pay for an appraisal because I personally don't think they are accurate. When it comes to contacting an end user, there is some controversy. A large portion of domainers say this is "scamming" but I believe if you believe the company can benefit by a specific domain shoot them an email. I have never received a bad response from an end user I thought could use a domain. Hope this helps.

Generally, professional appraisals have no value. Answering your other questions best comes from study and experience. Keep reading. Keep interacting with others in the market.

Well first of all your domain is certainly worth more than the registration fee so do not simply drop it :p

Here is what I am going to do for you, go to Google and type in Velvet, see all those sites listed that do not have the single keyword? Those are your targets and they are your end users; same goes for the 2nd page and the 3rd and so on...(I use the 100 results settings)

Here is a trick, swipe and paste everything you see in the main window and then go to your spreadsheet of choice, I use OpenOffice and place all your results in and the sort your data. You should end up with a big block of URLS:

Obviously you can and should remove the likes of IMBD, BBC and Youtube and all the others that will not be interested and then simply go down the list and offer the domain to them.

Actually valuing a domain is a bit like closing your eyes, smashing your head into a wall and then trying to throw a javelin at the eye of a needle 3 miles away. What you wish to get and what the other will want to pay will be poles apart, this is inevitable but there are some factors to take into account and that is the keywords field (fashion is good) the extension and various past sales for similar domains as well as a bit of a random factor in case someone really takes a shine to it. Thats all it is, a guessing game :)

(A time a while ago porn.com did not sell in a single month, it did not get a single bid and the next month it sold for $9.5M ~ You can never tell who may see it from one day to the next)

Do not waste your time with a paid appraisal, they are a waste of money and you will get far better feedback from simply asking people what they are willing to pay; particularly walk away if offered an unsolicited sale but someone will only buy if you pay for an appraisal from a company they suggest.

I would not bother simply parking anything less than a unhyphenated .com, there is no money in it because you will not get traffic. If you wish there are sites out there that allow you to write articles and host your domains for free so you can pull in visitors from the search engines and get revenue. It helps both ways in case someone does somehow type your domain in and come too.

Who you choose to contact is up to you, but for "velvet" my first thoughts are cloth traders, shoes people, dressmakers, boutiques...absolutely everyone you can associate with possibly or even improbably wanting your domain lol

(As you can see I am from England so a lot of results come up for .co.uk, you can change your Google URL from the default to a new location in order to get other URLS coming up in the results :)
