Hello! I'm not a domain sales professional, but I did work at ISPs back in the '90s so may have been the CSR who registered yours if you've been in the business for a long time. :)

I did however register some domains for myself -- I bought velvet.net in 1996 and for about 10 years used it as a personal site, non-profit server, and it did have its brief time being well-known in certain circles as did some of the accounts on it. I've not been doing much with it for the past few years.

Sentimentally it means a lot to me, but I have a kid now and money might be worth more... from my research it seems like it could fetch a lot given its shortness and single word. True?

I'd love some appraisals and advice on what to do going forward. Thanks so much!

Wow this is a good one! A think you could get a couple thousand but I'm no professional either. It has a high search volume and the second best extension. I wouldn't let it go for less than a thousand but that's just me.

It is a decent domain, imo easily in the low- to mid-$,$$$ range.

Very nice generic term. Many potential end users, for keyword and brandable usage.

Mid $X,XXX+ is very realistic.

Velvet is one of the coolest words on the planet. Even outside of the statistical angle, it has great value.

mid $xxxx

I think these appraisals are a bit on the low side, I'd go low to mid xx,xxx on this one and thats just based on recent sales. End user I'd put it right at $38,000. Quick sale/Flip I think you can get 8-10k.

The name just sounds smooth as velvet, and very cool with the .net extension.

Lyrics.net $65,000 Pvt Sale 6/3/10
Italy.net $52,000 MediaOptions/UpMarketURLs 8/23/10
Clothing.net $40,000 Sedo 12/8/10
Define.net $33,000 Sedo 11/10/10
FuneralHome.net $30,000 ProForma Inc. 3/3/10
DistanceLearning.net $30,000 Sedo 7/14/10

I second that....

low to mid $$$$ is a very low appraisal

It is short, single word, brandable.....

This is a very good domain and IMO it can fetch low to mid $xxxxx easily!

Good Luck and search the end user for this gem.

Wow, thanks! Now inevitably I have questions...

Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for your appraisals and helpful advice! You've given me so much food for thought. I hope it's okay to ask some clarifying questions.

Mid-to-high $$$$$ would be a miraculous life-changer for me and certainly would be worth the sentimental value for my domain. I am more than willing to put the work in to get that kind of money -- but how do I do that, not being in the domain business?

I've read all the documentation I could get my hands on here on NamePros and via a number of Google searches, but most of them seem to be for people like you guys -- who want to invest in domains as a hobby or business opportunity. Not someone who made a good choice 15 years ago and wants to make good choices now like me!

How do I find the right end users? What is a string keyword? I know what some of keke511 posted means, but not the rest. Indeed, like dnfever said, how do I search the end user?

Is it worth going with a domain auction house (Sedo etc) and which ones are any good? Is it worth getting a "certified" or "professional" appraisal type thing from the likes of Godaddy et al? Where would it be wise to park / host a domain like this; what is the best parking site for payout? What does one normally put on a parked page? Is it appropriate to contact companies directly that might have an interest such as ones with velvet in their name?

Is there a better place for me to post some of these questions? :)

Thanks again, everyone, I really appreciate it!

Hi, great name.

Don't waste your time or money on any 'certified' appraisals, from Sedo, GoDaddy, or any scammers who offer you paid appraisals via email.

The figures here give you an idea of what the name is worth, and even bonafide appraisals from experienced investors are usually the "minimum" you can accept for a name - because technically, for domains, there is no maximum. It all depends on how much a motivated user wants to pay for the name.

Parked pages are auto-generated for you, so I'd definitely recommend listing with Sedo. Whether or not you park it there or somewhere else, a parked page will be automatically uploaded. You have control over small elements of the page's design, but overall the layout/content of the page is at the company's discretion.

Sedo is one of the better brokerages for big names like this, and you can also list with Afternic/BuyDomains. Good luck! :)

I would consider emailing the velvet clothing company. Don't know much about them but I know they don't own velvet.com so I'm sure they will be interested.

Just start by making a few calls. Price would depend on your traffic stats as well. All the best and we would love to hear when you are selling this domain.

Clothing.net $40,000 Sedo 12/8/10

I think it has a great reseller value. High XXXX to Low XXXXX in my opinion. But it always depend on the buyer.

But if Clothing.net sold for $40,000, Velvet.net can't go above $20000.

I disagree with this statement and the reason was already posted above;

...there is no maximum. It all depends on how much a motivated user wants to pay for the name.

If he finds the ideal end user (Like the Velvet Clothing Company mentioned above?) then the sky really is the limit.

While I don't think this will break $40,000 I do feel it could fetch upto $30,000 if the right end user is found and the OP gets himself some professional help to assist with the sale.

Sahra, you have a great domain on your hands and I can only echo the advise given above and if your still not sure get yourself in contact with a professional that can advise you on the next steps to take.

Regards,
Gregory
