https://snapnames.com/domain/nih.com.action

I didn't bother waiting up for the auction because by 7PM EST the REDEMPTION PERIOD/PENDING DELETE status (I forget which one, it was late) had disappeared and it was redirecting again to nih.gov. Someone in the US government had realised their mistake and renewed the domain with 2 days to spare. No notification from Snapnames whatsoever and the auction is still up half a day later, even when the auction deadline has been and gone. Is it common behaviour for Snapnames to auction a domain name that is highly unlikely to become available and then not notify bidders when the domain has been reclaimed? I would have been annoyed if I hadn't thought to do a last-minute check on the WHOIS and had waited up until 2AM here. On top of that, it's such a risky domain that even if you did manage to buy it, holding on to it would likely have been a tough fight and had a good chance of involving lawyers.

Yeah, it's still in my backorders, but it appears you're right that it was redeemed:

And the auction is still up and gathering more bidders, about 180 when I posted the original post and 200 right now. At this point I'm convinced they really are the most incompetent company in domaining. But maybe I'm biased since I've currently been waiting more than 24 hours for a response to my query about my "verified bidder" status (which I know they've read), because for some reason I still have a bid limit despite having already gone through a verification process with them and given them my passport. Apparently they need to prove who I am twice.

Imagine how secure your government documents will be. 😳

Solution:

Just use GNAME to bid on their auctions instead.

Problem solved.

Just to note, that is not an expired auction purchase, which is what we're talking about in this thread.
I understand. The question remains whether Gname genuinely delivers the "Problem solved" outcome, that's why I shared John's findings in the link. John typically reviews matters very thoroughly, and his concern centers on trust. At least that's how I read it.
