Moving on from the 3D, Cloud , NFC, Marijuana etc....trends, what do people think will be the next big money maker for the domainer?

I have a few Big Data domains but I like my hand in several dishes so if anyone would like to share their thoughts I'm sure a lot of domainers would appreciate any insights to what's gonna be hot or not.

Cheers

Stu

@Mads thanks but I was looking for a specific place where they regularly update and give priority to the IoT trend.

Cheers.

Personally I dont think IOT will be much at all...if you do a custom google search, its been talked about since 2001 and still nothing

Just my opinion, for you guys, I hope Im totally wrong

I agree that IOT isn't likely to become a brand in itself, but I also don't see it as a passing fad. Hopefully there'll be continued interest in IOT between businesses and corporations over the coming years, and if so, they are more likely to be the end users when acquiring Internet of Things domains. Also, many IOT domains are still registered week after week, and seemingly not just by domainers. Investment in IOT domains happened mainly back in January when Internet of Things was introduced to the world during CES 2014. But yes, for most people, IOT is a bit of a misnomer, unlikely to catch on like 'Cloud Computing' or '3D Printing' has.

Glad i didn't jump on the IOT bandwagon..

http://www.networkworld.com/article...atching-on----just-don--39-t-call-it-iot.html

it simply never sounded like a real to be widely accepted buzzword, and isn't brandable either.. this functionality will be named in different ways (always related to its actual uses and area/topic).. we will see

An article suggesting to not utilize the term "IOT" all the while still continuing to utilize the term "IOT" throughout the remainder of the article....hmmmmmm, how interesting...........

The article is from April and since then I've read dozens of articles all still utilizing the term.

Also worth considering is it has been talked about since the early 2000's and domains were registered even then, there have not been many sales at all

Forgive me, but I see no relevance to this post at all.

According to wikipedia, 3D film has been around in some form since 1915. And I'm pretty sure things like hemp and marijuana have been around even longer. Sooo, what does that have to do with the price of domain sales today??

A lot when there are 3D and Weed sales going on but not IOT..and what do we all register names for...to sell them so it is kind of relevant in a way

Weed has just been legalised and thats why there are sales now...not because of how long its been around

3D names only started selling after Avatar made it mainstream and every 2nd movie at the box office was 3D

Its not how long its been around but whether something changes to make it mainstream or marketable like the above examples

Just because I haven't sold any IOT names yet, doesn't mean I don't ever expect them to sell. I'm a "glass half full" kind of girl ;)

You are the one who originally brought up the subject of the length of time a concept has been talked about as being worthy to note.

3D names only started selling after Avatar made it mainstream and every 2nd movie at the box office was 3D

So it could have just as easily been said, in say, 1999, "3D has been talked about for years, but we have yet to see many domain names sales"...More or less mirroring what you said regarding IOT a few posts up.

Its not how long its been around but whether something changes to make it mainstream or marketable like the above examples

Again, I've never considered length of time something has been talked about (amongst a small minority of people) as being a factor in whether or not something will ingrain itself into public minds and become mainstream.......and I do not consider IOT to be mainstream yet.

Honestly Giles, I'm really just going tit for tat here and I respect your outlook on IOT even if it doesn't jive with my outlook. Perhaps for the newbs I should also note that I do not count on domain name sales to put food on my table, but rather some nice spending money from time to time. I did not spend a substantial amount on my names, and I'm ok with holding on to them for another year or two.

Hmmm, I'm not really sure what happened to my post getting all chopped up like that, but really that last paragraph is all that matters.

Just to add, I've so far turned down over $1000 in offers for my IOT domains.

Nice mate, are they short names with "IOT" in them? Just curious?

The two main ones were Internet of Travel and Internet of Games domains. And also smaller offers on 2 IOT domains.

I think "Internet of dadada" domains have a good chance of doing well in the next couple of years. Yahoo registered a number of 'InternetofthingsTV' domains today.
