Moving on from the 3D, Cloud , NFC, Marijuana etc....trends, what do people think will be the next big money maker for the domainer?

I have a few Big Data domains but I like my hand in several dishes so if anyone would like to share their thoughts I'm sure a lot of domainers would appreciate any insights to what's gonna be hot or not.

Cheers

Or you could go all in on one solid name. Last I looked, either hoverbike or hoverbikes was listed at a 1000 dollar BIN. That would be a better move than regging hovercraftthis and hovercraft that. If you think it's a solid future domain, why buy second best?
These hover bikes will never become mainstream though, besides the thrill-seekers and the odd xtreme sportsmem, they will remain just a hobby. (Not to mention the price).....who knows in 20 years though, it takes years for companies to develop, test, market their own hover bike and then advertise it, then "if" they take off, its a few more years before the price drops and they are affordable to your average Joe...that's a lot of renewals

To make money while you are young enough to enjoy it, I would focus on trends maturing in 5 years or less

Do you remember where that BIN price was? I'd be happy to buy either of those for $1000.

I agree with Hovercraft, but not sure about the bikes? I could be way off base here though

Ya, a hover bike may be considered a type of "hover craft", but, hovercraft in itself is quality right now. I don't know anything about the bikes.

I see HoverBike.com is listed at BuyDomains with a BIN of $1049, I'm guessing that is what Domainace was referring to.

My bad. I meant to write hoverbike (at $1049). Obviously Hovercraft would be a Christmas present at $1000. I was referring to the hoverbikes being discussed by Giles. If someone thinks they are a solid bet for the future, it makes more sense to spend $1000 on the best domain in the niche.

If some instead goes for hand regs, they could easily get 10-11 lesser names (hoverbiketech, hoverbikesales, besthoverbike, etc.) at $100 for the lot. Hoverbikes may become a real product, but you would have to renew for, say, 7 years (that's being optimistic), so there's another $700. Now you're out $800. Now, if your dreams come true and hoverbikes are the new must-have toy of the rich in 7-8 years, you will have ten 2nd and 3rd place names where you could have had the gold for about the same investment and fewer ongoing costs.

Hoverbikes are a pretty cool concept, and there are prototypes. But I think they still fall short of our imagination.

Well said, thats the ideal way of thinking with future tech names

SDN and NFV technologies seem to be on the way up

From http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/1945176#ixzz333RPEKCQ

  • The opportunity in SDN and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is understated. The Rayno Report believes that open technologies serving as the foundation for SDN and NFV represents the biggest shift in networking in 20 years.
  • There have already been $3 billion in startup exits in the SDN space, and Arista Networks has filed to go public shortly. The Rayno Report concludes there will likely be at least another $20 billion in value created, but potentially much more.
  • So far, at least $600 million has been in invested into SDN and NFV startups at the venture capital level. Expect another $1 billion more to be invested over the next three to five years.

Hover Crafts are also for "thrill-seekers and the odd extreme sportsmen" , I don't know a single person who owns one and they are very expensive , yet I would hate to guess a price for either of the domains HoverCraft.com or HoverCrafts.com .

Hover Bikes will join these ranks in my opinion, at $85,000 a bike, what would be the value of either HoverBike.com or HoverBikes.com to a maker of one? Direct traffic from people wanting to buy one or enquire is extremely valuable, especially at $85,000 a pop.

I do think Hover Bike's will come down in price and be more streamlined to a size of an actual Motor Bike....and looking at these websites and pictures I would say that things are moving in this direction already -

http://www.hover-bike.com/

http://aerofex.com/theaerox/

The new Gtld Domain -

Hover.bike

It appear's to have been taken in Feb this year......and now directs to domainnamesales.com

All future tech is speculative until its real....

I think mainstream Holo Tv will not be until another 10-15 years......We already have holographic dead pop stars coming through now, but to convert this into something that is in your living room will take many years to perfect and come down to a realistic affordable price. However like all start-ups in all types of technology, domain names are generally bought at the beginning of a journey, so many years before tech is developed and perfected in a particular sector, any investor / company could be eyeing up a future trend domain already in someone's portfolio.

When things start to materialize, they do at speed ...........Just my look on things.

Cheers

Stu
