As far as I know, here are no legal limitations to sell a domain immediately after registering it... as long as you find someone to buy it. (there are limitations to changing registrar for 3 months, but it does not prevent the domain to be sold.)

Most domains are sold without traffic. If a domain is developped into a site with pages and traffic, it's usually called 'selling a website'

Your chances to hand register a valuable new domain are very small (but not zero). Most domainers consider that all valuable domains have already been purchased and they buy them from auctions hoping to resell them with a profit a few months or a few years later.

1. Well that's really the definition of "flipping". But it's easier said, than done. I'm not sure what you mean by "free domains", but generally if they're free, there's a reason for it. If your just spamming all willy-nilly as a bulk search in the hopes of a quick/liquid pay off, I'd say that's surely one of the least efficient things you could do, and you don't stand to see a $ return that justifies the time spent.

2. Whether or not traffic is needed, wanted, etc., is going to depend upon the buyer. But the majority of end users or buyers you'll ever have relations with, probably will be far less concerned about traffic reports (if at all), than the name itself. A person who's buying a name just for traffic vs just for the branding/name itself, are generally 2 different types of buyers.

and as @aramyus touched down on, the lock. Although the name can still be moved via an account change (~account change vs ~transfer).

1. First off, there is no such thing as registering a free domain. And if there is, I would doubt there is any value in that extension. However, if you mean you won a free domain on a giveaway or trade then that's a different story. The closest to registering a free domain I know of is using the Godaddy coupon code for 0.99 on your first registration. Regardless, once you have this domain that you just recently registered, yes, it is very possible to sell it on any marketplace for a higher price. As long as the name is good in the eyes of either an investor or in the rare case you happen to find an end-user who's interested in your name, then you could very well make a handsome profit.

2. The domain does not have to have any traffic for you to successfully sell it. Selling a domain name is all about the value of the name itself. How it sounds. How memorable it is. How easy it is to spell. How familiar it is, and so on and so fourth. If someone likes the name then they will buy it based on these and other factors as well as the extension of course.
