Hello everyone.

My name is Paul and I am new to domaining. I am from the UK but have a company in Bulgaria buying and selling real estate. We have been trading for 8 years now and I love what I do !

My passion in life is travel and my work enables me to indulge - most of my working day is spent on the internet - as long as I have a laptop and WiFi I can nuke my work anywhere. Hence my interest in domaining.

If I can make a little money from this to buy a beer or two great. I have bought a few domains and will head off to the appraisal section to list a few - let me know what you think ?

One other thing - do any of you think the new co.com domains are going to do well overtime ? I bought a few examples of which are

Supermarket.co.com
Pharmaceutical.co.com
Pharmaceuticals.co.com

Bought a few .coms as well. One example is computers-laptops.com which I thought was OK ish ?

Waste of pennies or sit on them ?

Look forward to catching up with some of you later.

Best,
Paul

Hi Paul, Welcome to the world of domain names.

I am new to the forum myself but old to the industry.

The domain playing field - the best analogy I can give is that domain names are like chess - .com is the king then the rest filters down. There are a few types of domains but the most important are gTLD's (general top level domains such as .com) ccTLD's (country coded top level domains .co.uk, .de, .fr) and nTLD (new top level domains .link, .london, etc) - nTLD's are swarming the market place so interesting times.

If you are starting out - I suggest you invest in .com - more of an established selling market place and it is known by all whether you are in the industry or not. The rest of course have value but it is not as valuable across the world, for instance .co.uk is only truly valuable in the UK etc.

Something that has stuck with me like anything a domain/product is only as profitable/valuable as the people/marketplace that want it so look for 'in the now' topics/tech/news/subjects as that is a great staring point.

Also never use brand names like ADIDAS, NIKE - trademark law and infringement is not something you want to get into.

Clear concise generic terms/words arre the best way to go and the shorter the word (character length) can sometimes be the best.

Goodluck with starting a portfolio and give me a shout anytime.

Welcome to forum Paul, in the beginning its better to stick to .com non hyphenated domains until you have a better understading of the industry. Often one letter can be the difference between a good and a bad domain.

Computers-Laptops.com like you said is OK - ish, How many people are searching for "Computers Laptops"? (Make use of Google Adword: Keyword Planner) Why would they want Computers-Laptops.com over ComputersAndLaptops.com or LaptopsAndComputers.com?

Try and keep the domain as short as possible and avoid hyphens, some foreign markets use hyphens often but for English domains try and avoid them. Computers-Laptops.com is probably going to lose traffic to ComputersLaptops.com. The plurals on the words also make it less attractive - it just doesn't sound right.

Take a look at dnjournal . com weekly sales report to get an idea of what is selling.

Thanks for the advice CD. Everyone seems to say the same about sticking to just .coms to start with. I will certainly take this on board.

As for computers-laptops.com. I bought it as a newly expired domain for ยฃ6 - I guess it is worth a punt at that price - if it buys me a beer or two then happy days ;)

Best,
Paul

You can always make a site out of computers-laptops.com with Amazon/other affiliate links...
