I would not use a free host if you can avoid it. You don't want to get a nice site going and then have your host mess it up by having problems, or have to move a forum to a new server. It can be done, but that's not a headache you want until you have techy friends or more experience.

Do some searches for cheap hosting and you should find several to compare, but I can recommend Lacehost.com. They have a starter plan that's dirt cheap, yet they provide good support and you will have all the features of a basic plan at one of the larger hosting companies. If you outgrow the capacity of the plan in 6 months or so, you can just upgrade to the next level and it's still cheap.

Disclaimer: I have two accounts with them and I am an affiliate, but I get no credit from them if you use the URL for their site and sign up with them.

Oh, you will want to do some research on forum software also. Spend some time learning about which one to get first, and also about the common problems forum owners have. The other thing to consider is that after you create the forum, then what? No one is going to come to your forum without content or promotion. You will need to get the forum going first so that when visitors come they seem something happening. If there are no posts, most people won't register and join and post. You need to have a way to get it started. This may mean asking friends to help, paying people, holding contests, or creating 22 user accounts and posting as different people such as "Bouncing Betty"... :) I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm trying to make it easier for you so you know what you getting into. Good Luck!

or you can seek free/cheap hosting that has cpanel with fantastico, and then you can easily install and configure your own forum.

I use Lunarpages.com myself. With a coupon you can get their basic plan, which is actually very powerful for under $5/month.

If you're serious about your site, then don't think about free hosting, they are not worth the hassle. Even a cheap shared hosting plan is better then free hosting.

Avoid Free Hosting.
Select an Hosting with Cpanel & Fantastico: very easy to setup a forum with Cpanel.
If you have Paypal, I can make you a very cheap custom plan with Cpanel

yup agree with two of you, the problem with free hosting is there is simply no guarantee.
If you serious about your forum, you should choose hosting that can guarantee uptime and regular automatic database backup.
I never find these two feautures on free hosting.

Hi. I'm newbie in domain biz but not that new to webmaster sh!t. ;)

Avoid free hosting. And for god sake, avoid subodimains under free hosts. About 1 year ago I've just tried freehostia (5GB/month), quit good for free, just have build my first newbie webmasters guide blog, just for kicks, but I've made some promotions and I've got PR1 and about 15 uniques /day - not much but I've got some good referrals that are earning me some money for months. But now my old unmanaged blog is dead, nobody know why.

I have some good friends in webmaster community that have started with blogspot with adult blogs with free content hosted on image, file and streaming hosts. When they got >5000 uniques they mostly got reported and sequently banned.

ALWAYS be ON YOUR OWN else You're lose Your sites one day.

For example, with Servage (sucks but what can You expect for such few $).
You have 5000GB/month (they expect You don't spend it all, especially when it's 170GB/day not 5000/month annually)
You got some 500GB of storage, You don't need that much and I'm sure You can't go to 100% of storage;)
There's 400,000 hit (element load) / day limit (might be higher since every parameter in servage grew since I've lasted knew this info).

You got 1000 MySQL's, You can put dozens of domains under one account.

Biggest problems are downtimes, especially when using MySQL.
But for 6,35 EURO + VAT (if non-european it's 6,35 DOLLARS) if You pay for 14 months and You'll get one domain for free (don't pick domain you really want cause it will cost You 25$ next year).

so for about 100$ + VAT (if You pick seychelles, it's without VAT) You have reasonable host for 14 months and can host tons of domains there.

There are plenty of similar cheap shared hostings but mostly have higher CPU usage limits.

When you go with free hosting you are putting your neck under the boss of the free hosting. They will most probably disable your account/ ban you.

So pay for a webhost even if its cheap one. The one in my sig is recommended with past reviews and experience. Feel free to check them.

Not advertising!! :shy:
