Hey guys.. I don't know much about backordering/droping names. Is there a good tutorial somewhere?

There is one name I am looking at (.us) It is backordered at godaddy looks like, But I ordered it on snap names. Not sure how the whole process works.. does it go to the first person who backordered it? Can you backorder it the day before it drops? When do domains go to some sort of auction or not?

I am very confused on the whole topic - any advice or direction would be much apreciated. Thanks!

Hey, (thanks for the np, :talk:) o.k. if you back ordered it, then Snap if going to try to get it for you, once you pick the name, check out, and then it goes in "my auctions". Now that name has a date, for example FHF.COM is on snap, it looks like this:

fhf.com Whois 214 $79.00 04-Jun-2008 Available Soon

If you want that name then you add it to your cart, when that date hits it goes to auction for the people who put that name in their carts (214). Then you bid against the people who have it in their carts. If nobody has a name in their cart then there is no auction and the name is yours. When you look at the search you'll see that is has "available soon" and "join auction", you can choose any, just go to the left and "add to cart" Some names are drops and others are personal auctions and I think snap gets %20 from sellers.

I think that's it, see what others say......

take care, thanks again....

Just out of interest, I see you have made 411 posts and are a NamePros Regular. So what area of domaining are you active in? I assumed that active domainers are well versed in buying names. What else do domainers do. I'm a real newbie to all of this stuff. I don't want to be missing anything!

Hey John, nice to meet you. I mostly develop sites. Not into the whole.... "omg zyxq.com is worth xxx". Any domain can rake in hundreds or thousands developed. I don't believe names are as important as people say. Yes they are important... but not if they are just sitting at a parked page.

But domainers do different things.. some are skilled in finding drops, some are skilled at finding available domains, some are skilled at buying up LLLL.com. Just random things. There are tons of stuff I don't know myself and you will see they I do ask alot of simple questions here, but thats what you have to do to learn :)

Hey Mike.

So, you develop sites. Do you buy sites and improve them ( sort of like buying a fixer-up property) or do you start from scratch with a new domain and build from there? I am/was a driving instructor in the UK but I have had to close down that business. I've got bowel cancer (early stages and 99% certain to be cured within a few months) so I am looking to work from home.
I am taking my first steps into domaning and I'm already developing a domain that I own, Instructor.org.uk aimed at a large market in the UK, people who want to become driving instructors. Looking to learn...and earn.

Thanks for the reply

John

Oops, sorry. Just realised that this is off-topic and should be discussed in the newbie section. My bad!
