OK. So let's say I want to backorder a .us name from GoDaddy. However, I see that it's already been backordered and is no longer available.

Or is it?

Because when I look on the GoDaddy page for their backordering explanation, one of the paragraphs states:
If the name you are interested in has gone to auction at The Domain Name Aftermarket, the $18.99 cost will be used to place the opening bid on the name. If no other bids are placed, the domain will be awarded to you subject to the rights of the previous domain holder. If another bid is received on the name, you will receive an outbid notice and can raise your bid on the name or move the backorder to another name.

Why would it go to auction if the backorder was successful?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

This is a good question and I have found that an early placed backorder will sometimes keep the name from going to tdnam auction. Conversely, a backorder placed after the name has gone to tdnam will not be useful unless no one else bids on the name at tdnam (in which case GD will LOCK your backorder on the tdnam name and you will be unable to change the backorder).

Also, if a name is taken in a GD backorder slot and you temporarily remove the backorder, the name gets automatically (instantly) routed to tdnam. I lost a very good domain this way not realizing that removing my existing backorder would send the name to tdnam.

Do you know if GoDaddy only goes after GoDaddy names? Or will they also try and catch dropping names from a different registrar?

Tdname expiring name auctions are only godaddy and wildwest registered names. Godaddy backorder will go after names other than those currently registered at godaddy. therefore, a GD backorder on a non-godaddy name will NOT go to auction first.

From the godaddy FAQ:
Q) I had a backorder on a domain name that went to auction. How did that happen?

Backorders placed on GoDaddy.com-registered domain names after May 2, 2005 automatically go to TDNAM for auction, using the cost of your backorder as the opening bid.

If there are no other bidders, you will be awarded the domain name, subject to the current registrantโ€™s rights. The cost of the domain will be $18.95, which is the amount you paid for your backorder (your initial $10 bid, plus the $8.95 renewal fee).

If you are outbid, you will be notified via email, at which point you may choose to increase your bid amount or move your backorder to another name of interest.

Q) Does my Back Order have any value?

Yes. Backorders are used as opening bids for names currently at auction at TDNAM. In addition, backorders also serve as a valuable tool for grabbing names from other registrars through the drop pool process.

For example, your backorder will be used as the opening bid at auction for any name registered through GoDaddy.com that has gone into auction at TDNAM.

Your backorder can also help you capture names from other registrars through the drop pool process. If your backordered name is dropped by the registrar and we are successful in capturing it at the registry, we will assign the name to your account. The cost of the domain will be $18.95, which is the amount you paid for your backorder (your initial $10 bid, plus the $8.95 renewal fee).

From the godaddy FAQ:

TDNAM and most registrars place a "backorder" on domains that MAY drop in the future, doesn't mean that they will. Then all the registrars fight it out, each registrar getting a certain number of stabs at the domain pool. That's why Pool owns so many nameless ICANN licensed registrars, it allows them to have a better chance to grab domains. However, TDNAM mainly deals in domains from their own registrar and wild west resellers.

Even if you get a domain in an auction, doesn't mean you'll get the domain if the previous owner fights to renew it, even that late. In any domain drop, even in SNap and Pool, a domain can disappear from the final drop date even though it's been listed and you made your bids.

I have had a domain "pushed" from my account after only 40 days of expiration. Does anyone know if a registrar can push a name taht expires? usually its 45 days, then redemption period then pending delete, as most know about 80-95 days. The guy that got my name has the same annual expiry date as me, in other words, he aquired my name for a period of 10 1/2 months or so. no purging no pending delete. after 300 names, i finally got caught with my pants down. I can here the tisk tisk as im typing this. anyone know if a registrar can do this?

With all that competition for expired domains, is it still possible to jag a domain that drops if you have not paid to backorder it ? and would the registra auction the domain or fill the backorder first before making the domains available to all ?
