Simply point the web browser on your mobile phone to http://m.opentable.com

Also regular website www.opentable.com

Who needs .mobi

irrelevant comment. if you're going to take the time to criticize, at least try to be coherent. what does your comment have to do with the original post/pr?

why do people have to crap in every .mobi thread? why are posts like this even permitted?

vanex, let me point this out for you: guess what? OPENTABLE isn't even needed? call the restaurant directly. better yet? go to the restaurants that will always give you a table no matter how busy they are.

funny thing is: the PR shows that even .COM isn't always needed. Fishing.mobi will exist without needing to own/buy/lease fishing.com from Skip.

vanex, are you sour because your not renewing you're (first name) .mobis and they're dropping at tdnam right this moment? could that be why? A person's personal .mobi portfolio is no indication of the overall market. Good luck with your future/current regs.

vanex, lets suppose it is 2014 and the mobile phone is the defacto main gateway to the web, as in, more people access the web via their phones and more money is spent on products and services via the phone. Lets also 'predict' that during the next five years .mobi gains substantial public awareness from efforts made by its sponsoring corporations such as google and nokia, and all the thousands of multinational branded mobi sites such as coke.mobi etc (that btw are growing by the day).

Now lets say that you use www.m.vanextfishingtackle.com for your mobile site and plan to spend $50,000 on marketing of this site, meanwhile fishing.mobi is available to be purchased for $5,000, that essentially markets itself. Hmmm, the most generic name in one of the top two (.com +.mobi) most appropriate TLD is available, what shall we do?

Vanex why are you waging your mini propaganda war on this forum?
You are fighting a losing battle and, IMO, you are exposing a very limited and uninformed vision of the future of the web. As a domain investor and business man you should read up on this mobile web, it will eclipse the regular web very soon.

You may wish to hedge your bets with dotmobi while the prices are accessible, forget mobi's relevance for technical reasons, its simply a new namespace for a new and incredibly powerful medium. And like anything and any business decision you make, you best get on board early before mass market adoption. Making that investment requires taking risk, but there is enough information out there to lend weight to the idea that mobi will be a phenomenal success!

IMO your expectations are way optimistic. In 2014 mobile devices will have improved.
As time goes by, technology evolves, making the rationale for stripped-down websites even more obsolete.

I don't see that happening. In particular when some of the big 'backers' are not backing.
I think too few corporations really care about the ext. and .mobi is losing the race.

OK, let me ask you a question. How many years do you think it will take for you to decide whether the extension has succeeded or has failed ?

For example, 7 years on it is clear (to me at least) that .biz has failed in spite of the respectable registration figures. There are still people who use and like the extension, but few would venture to say that .biz is a sound investment.

One new mobi site out of millions upon millions of websites and that's new life? That's like taking a pee in the ocean and telling people you raised the ocean level.

Coke.mobi was an example, not the only site ofcourse.

Regarding .biz, I personally didn't invest in it, as it seems to be simply another version of .com. Dotmobi signifies a different type of site for a different medium. It signifies this at a moment in history when a vast quantity of new sites and web applications are ready to be built to cater to a new and different market. This market encompasses all the old sites and functionalities, but also all the diverse new functionalities available, from- location based services, the the use of camera-phones, to image recognition, to qr barcodes, mp3 players, dictaphone, ebook readers, to video games, and also telephony. New applications will need new domains!

There are plenty of stats and projections out there on how many phones there are, how many are web enabled, how many smartphones etc. How much cash is being spent on the mobile web and where the trends are headed. 2014 may or may not be correct, but the trends are undeniable. The mobile web will rule planet Earth in the near future. It seems very logical that a big chunk of that market will go to dotmobi sites.

If you watch this clip through to the end you will hear a sound business perspective on dotmobi-

I completely disagree.

Technology may evolve but screen sizes on mobiles will not. Therefore, it will always be necessary to have a stripped down site. Of course we know that .com sites can be brought to mobile...but it's a real drag to try navigating them!

ALso you should check out the weather channel video about how many page views they are getting. I forget teh link but someone will post it I am sure.

There is defintly a big sign that .mobi is very much alive and kicker strong...ANd its only the begining :sold:

As the world evolves, some things stay the same...
the standard that dot mobi requires is a staying point to all the K-rap that regular sites with all the funky scripts and flash ads have...

Good point!

I work as a consultant for a large Fortune 500 company and at our office there are about 1000 people working there and half of them are working against a Citrix Server. If more than 4 users at the same time are surfing to a particular tabloid newspaper that has lots of flash ads... The Citrix Server will crash! D-:

Each user that visits this tabloid site will use %25 of the server’s resources! Since the majority of the workers are women that tend to enjoy this site this means that our server is ALWAYS overloaded! SOLUTION Block the URL of tabloid site and the server is back to normal.

But hey... You can use your iPhone to surf this tabloid site if you want and it will work fine. But wouldn't it be better if the site would load even quicker without all flash ads, java applets, banners e.t.c. and imagine how happy your wallet would be if you didn’t have to pay for all those extra kilobits just to read the latest gossip about Lindsay Lohan :snaphappy:

Websites are getting more advanced and more demanding every year... NOT Less!

Flash, Java and CMS are the norm today not the exception. Some of these new sites are slow even on my spanking new gaming PC that i built this summer. I wouldn’t wanna visit them with my phone, but i guess it's better to make the phones more powerful rather than to keep the information simple. Maybe that’s why the average battery time hasn’t increased much since the mobile phone was invented :]
