Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading NamePros for a while and finally decided to join.

Quick question for domainers and SMB owners:

Have you ever lost a domain or had downtime because a renewal failed(auto-renew didn’t work, card expired, emails missed, etc.)?

Not selling anything — just trying to understand how common this really is and what people here consider the safest setup.
Would really appreciate any experiences or lessons learned.

Since posting this, I've actually started building around this exact problem.

Working on a renewal-focused infrastructure model, applied to YC and joined a hackathon to test it publicly.

Still very early.

Would genuinely value criticism, risk scenarios, or hard question from experienced domainers.

Yes it happens more often than people admit especially with expired cards or email notifications going to old inboxes. The safest setup in my opinion: auto-renew ON, multiple payment methods added, calendar reminders, and portfolio audits every quarter. Relying on one system alone is risky.

That makes sense. I've seen the same pattern with expired cards and renewal emails going to abandoned inboxes. A friend of mine lose very big domains because of that.

One thing I'm really curious about from experienced domainers here:

If you had the option to lock a domain's renewal through some kind of a capitalised reserve (for example a deposit that permanently funds renewals from generated yield), would you consider using something like that instead of credit card for your most important domains?

Not talking about speculation domains - but things like core brand assets or long-term projects.

Or do most domainers simply prefer the flexibility of manual renewals and portfolio management?

Tryiing to understand where the real friction is today.
