New gTLD count as of 22 March

Hello,

It's been a few weeks since the new gTLDs were allocated so I thought it would be interesting to post some charts with current registration figures. Here they are.
Note that some TLDs are not open to the public yet. The zones then typically contain nothing more than a few test domains including nic.gtld...

However, if you have bought domains in a particular TLD, you can see how it's been doing so far vs other TLDs

Not quite. Some of the data indicates that there is a compressed launch in operation for some new gTLDs and unless there are some major changes, these low registration volumes are going to continue or decline. Patterns and trends that would generally take a few months to appear are appearing in days or weeks.

Certainly seems so. A good guide will be the level of calls to ICANN to change the rules; be allowed to cough "fairly compete" and requests for new advantages over other players especially

existing competitors etc.

Well Amazon, and Google had to pay 185 Large, for each extension they applied for. You think they just picked a bunch of names out of a hat, and said let's just throw a couple mil at what ever name is picked?

$185k to these guys is nothing. They buy stuff for protection or with no plan at all.

really, so you dont think that .guru being #1 has anything to do with it being within the first few launched?

the simple registration #'s for .berlin is all we need to know? or maybe its worth noting they're giving them away for free the first year... so numbers are kinda misleading by themselves.

The real test will be the renewal rate. Then we'll see how many people are ready to pull out their wallets. The 'demand', especially paid registrations, is a measure of perception by end users.

Giving domains for free could be a smart way to kickstart an extension, but there is a risk these domains will not be actively used and developed, or worse, used for nefarious activities like phishing or spamming. Treated like disposable domains. Because you know, when you give something for free, people are more careless then they would be if they had to pay for it with their hard-earned dollars.

A high prevalence of bad usage could bring discredit to the whole extension at a critical stage, when it is new and unproven.
.tk is a good example of a ruined extension, .info to a lesser extent.

Well it looks like it will be overtaken by .BERLIN if it maintains its current growth.

.GURU:
Today: 45,258
Yesterday: 45,118

.GURU daily growth: 140 , 195 , 179, 225, 219, 242, 107, 155, 227, 245

.BERLIN:
Today: 39,992
Yesterday: 39,250

.BERLIN daily growth: 742, 1244, 1945, 4408, 31486

There is even a visible weekend slump in the .GURU growth figures. That's a sign that the momentum is falling towards a predictable level instead of one where there is a mad frenzy to register domains.

The real information will be in the usage figures which though related to the simple registration figures, are far harder to measure.

Numbers are numbers. It is the interpretation that can vary. It can be clueful or it can be completely crazy marketing.

Yep. Especially the Year 2 renewal figures (launch year being Year 0).

It is a high risk but .BERLIN has both usage and takeback clauses in its registrant agreement.

Treated like disposable domains. Because you know, when you give something for free, people are more careless then they would be if they had to pay for it with their hard-earned dollars.

A classic Boom and Bust cycle like that of .INFO is a possibility.

.tk is a good example of a ruined extension, .info to a lesser extent.

There's also a worse possibility - that of .EU ccTLD where a combination of massive overspeculation and incompetently designed regulatory framework and an incompetent registry killed off natural development of the ccTLD for years. Despite the waffle about its usage by Eurid, the usage stats for .EU are closer to .BIZ or .INFO than the core TLDs in most EU countries.

If they see the value of the "premium" domains that they are holding back falling and the general growth dropping to a hundred or less a day, then that is a possibility.

Are the numbers likely to be impacted by the ICANN meeting running this week?

Unless they start giving domains away free to the attendees, it is unlikely. The Donuts ngTLDs EDUCATION, .INSTITUTE, .REPAIR, .CAMP and .GLASS are open to all on 26/March. But the one to watch will be tomorrow morning's figure for .BERLIN as it might indicate if the fall off in growth was just the two weekend days. The end user rarely takes any notice of ICANN meetings though. Apart from .BERLIN and a few regionals, the whole new gTLD launch to date has been a very American (US/CA) affair.

The weekend/weekday effect is visible. Most of the growth figures have increased as yesterday, Monday, was a weekday. However growth in .GURU is settling down as is the .BERLIN figure. The interesting one in the set is .COMPANY.
